About the role
The CNC Operator & Shop Technician will join our Prototype Manufacturing team working as an on-site employee. Key responsibilities include programming, setting up, and operating CNC machines, reviewing CAD files, inspecting parts, collaborating with engineers, and maintaining a safe, organized work environment.
Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and operate CNC machines (including 4 & 5 axis mills, lathes, and multi-axis) to fabricate metal parts to precise specifications for prototypes and small production runs.
- Receive and review CAD files and technical drawings from the engineering group for prototype and production projects.
- Read and interpret work instructions, blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and part specifications to determine required dimensions, tolerances, and sequence of operations.
- Program CNC machines using Mastercam software to create accurate, high-quality parts.
- Select appropriate tools, fixtures, and materials for each job based on engineering requirements.
- Inspect finished parts and prototypes for accuracy and quality using precision measuring tools and instruments.
- Collaborate and communicate with engineers and designers to optimize manufacturability and resolve design or production challenges.
- Maintain detailed documentation of CNC programming, machine setups, material usage, and process improvements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues with CNC machines, tooling, or production processes as they arise.
Requirements
- Completion of a certificate or diploma program in CNC programming, machining, or a related field is preferred; or at least three (3) years of direct CNC programming experience using Mastercam or similar software.
- Two (2) years of hands-on CNC programming and operation experience, ideally with prototypes or low volume production.
- Confident in reading and interpreting CAD models, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for documentation and communication.
- Organized and systematic in handling materials, receiving, and delivery.
- Strong communication skills, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail—including experience with precision measurement tools.
- Demonstrated understanding of workplace safety practices and basic machine maintenance procedures.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies, such as lean manufacturing or Six Sigma.
- Collaborative team player who is genuinely invested in the success of the group, actively supporting colleagues, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a positive, high-performing team environment.
- Coachable person who looks for best practices in operations.
- Able to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods of time.
