The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU APL) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated CNC Machinist to join a creative, multi-disciplinary fabrication team. You will manufacture next-generation spacecraft, undersea hardware, shipboard test systems, and communication components, supporting programs from R&D prototype to flight hardware that meet AS9100 standards. This role offers opportunities to work on 3-axis and multi-axis CNC milling machines and routers, explore sophisticated programming, fabricate complex hardware, and work with a wide range of materials (composites, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, refractory metals, experimental alloys, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Set up, program, maintain, and operate CNC and conventional milling machines for end-to-end manufacturing with minimal direction.
  • Analyze and interpret solid models and blueprints to meet customer specifications, applying skills in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Perform in-process inspection using precision measuring instruments (e.g., I.D. and O.D. micrometers, calipers, height gauges) to verify hardware specifications and tolerances, coordinating with quality assurance.
  • Communicate and collaborate with engineers and designers to provide fabrication insight on complex designs.
  • Maintain proficiency with all applicable quality processes associated with assigned work.
  • Monitor and record work duration in the ERP system in accordance with business and quality procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience with set-up, programming, and operation of CNC machining equipment.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM programming software (Mastercam preferred).
  • Proficiency in operating general computer functions (e.g., email, file directories, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Functional understanding of programming languages (G-Code/Heidenhain).
  • Proven experience with set-up, programming, and operation of vertical or multi-axis CNC milling machines.
  • Experience with conventional manual milling machines.
  • Experience interpreting blueprints using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to inspect hardware using common measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauge pins, thread gauges, indicators, height gauges).
  • Ability to acquire an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately a Secret level clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Experience in multi-axis machining, including simultaneous toolpathing.
  • Experience with MasterCam (2024+) programming software.
  • Familiarity with Mazak, DMG-Mori (Siemens), Haas, or Heidenhain CNC controls.
  • Leadership and/or operations management experience.
  • Track record of quoting/estimating work.
  • Degrees/certifications in relevant manufacturing subject areas.
  • A current security clearance at the Secret or Top-Secret level.

Schedule

This position follows a work schedule of 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Opportunities for overtime will be available as needed.

Pay

Minimum Rate: $30.75 hourly
Maximum Rate: $51.25 hourly
