About the role
This is a trainee/apprentice level position responsible for producing machined parts by operating a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe or milling machine, maintaining quality and safety standards, keeping records, and maintaining equipment and supplies.
Responsibilities
- Operate drill presses, manual milling machines, CNC milling machines, manual lathes, and CNC lathes under close supervision.
- Load and unload raw materials and parts into the machine.
- Inspect and measure finished product using calipers, gauges, micrometers, and other machinist hand tools.
- Compare finished product to drawing specifications to determine adherence to company quality standards.
- Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting operations (including turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing) and taking measurements.
- Notify the supervisor or area lead if more complex tool or machine adjustments are required.
- Optimize production by performing secondary work such as deburring or drilling while machines are running.
- Keep work area clean and orderly, complying with established 5S standards.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following company, OSHA, and EPA rules and regulations, implementing machine safeguards, recognizing and reporting safety hazards, and adhering to all safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as required within the nature and level of work.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Experience in a machine shop environment is preferred.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand basic English.
- Proficiency in basic math and trigonometry.
- Ability to communicate and work as a team member.
- Ability to use measuring tools.
Physical Demands
- Required to stand, walk, or sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 35 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
