CNC Horizontal Boring Mill (HBM) Machinist

About the role

Mechanical Dynamics and Analysis LLC, a world‑class supplier of power generation services, parts and repairs, is seeking a CNC Horizontal Boring Mill (HBM) Machinist for its Bearings, Seal & Hydraulics division. The machinist will set up, program, and operate computer‑controlled machines to precision‑machine large, heavy metal or composite workpieces.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate horizontal boring mill machines, including tool offsets and program adjustments.
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, sketches, engineering orders, work instructions, charts and graphs to determine machining methods and sequence.
• Program, edit, and troubleshoot G‑code and CNC‑HBM control panels.
• Perform mathematical calculations and layout center lines, reference points, machining guidelines, and angular dimensions.
• Use proper material‑handling techniques and operate overhead cranes/rigging to position raw materials.
• Adjust machine cutting paths or settings to optimize production while maintaining quality, safety, and efficiency.
• Make machine adjustments, tool changes, and program edits as required.
• Apply knowledge of machining characteristics of various materials to pre‑set or improvise tooling.
• Set and adjust machine controls (speeds, feeds, depth of cut, axis configuration).
• Operate multi‑position machines to perform contouring, profiling, turning, back‑spot facing, boring, milling, drilling, slotting, and tapping.
• Listen to machine sounds to detect dull tools or excessive vibration and make corrective adjustments.
• Use hand, power, and precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.) to verify dimensions, surface finish, and tolerances.
• Perform post‑machine hand work and deburring of components.
• Inspect finished parts against blueprints and inspection reports; identify defects.
• Maintain accurate counts of completed and scrapped parts.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Document actions, irregularities, and continuity across work shifts.
• Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot malfunctions, and keep maintenance records.
• Report issues promptly to the Vice President or General Manager of the BSH Division.

Qualifications

• Proficient in blueprint reading and technical drawing interpretation.
• Strong knowledge of G‑ and M‑machining codes.
• Experience with CNC‑HBM programming and control panels.
• Solid understanding of math and layout concepts (fractions, percentages, ratios, geometry, trigonometry).
• Tooling knowledge and ability to adapt or improvise tooling when standard tools are unavailable.
• Ability to operate a tow motor and overhead crane without assistance.
• Skilled in using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and depth micrometers.
• Strong computer and software skills; ability to apply quality standards and gauging.
• Mechanical aptitude and interest in personal development within the machining trade.
• Ability to work with limited supervision while maintaining safety, cleanliness, and organization.
• Effective communication, teamwork, and respect for coworkers.
• Detail‑oriented with strong time‑management skills.
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing concepts, 5S, and continuous‑improvement strategies.
• Ability to follow all safety policies, quality‑management procedures, IT standards, and standard operating procedures.
• Capability to analyze processes, develop cost‑reduction strategies, and allocate resources efficiently.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as needed.
• Frequent use of hands to handle or feel materials and tools.
• Frequent reaching with hands and arms.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lb.
• Operate overhead cranes and tow motors safely.
• Work in a shop‑floor environment with exposure to fumes, metal chips, moving mechanical parts, and vibration within acceptable limits.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Trade‑school machinist training (preferred).
• Reading and writing proficiency in English.

Work Environment

Shop‑floor setting with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, metal chips, moving mechanical parts, and vibration, all within acceptable environmental and regulatory limits.

Reporting

Reports to the General Manager or Work Leader (Vice President or General Manager of the BSH Division).
