About the Role
The Unit Assistant performs clerical duties, maintains customer records, and acts as a team member across all hospital departments. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, this role assists with patient care, including activities of daily living, basic patient care, and maintaining a safe and clean environment. The Unit Assistant also performs accuchecks and EKGs as ordered by physicians or licensed independent practitioners.
The role includes providing clerical support and reception duties, such as registering patients using Meditech, placing orders, and collaborating with the Materials Management Department to ensure adequate supplies. The position requires the ability to work under pressure, demonstrating patience, tact, stamina, and endurance while interacting with patients ranging from neonatal (1 day) to old age (85+ years).
Responsibilities
- Perform clerical duties and maintain customer records.
- Assist nurses in carrying out physicians' orders.
- Collaborate with co-workers to ensure optimal unit operation.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living and provide basic care.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Perform accuchecks and EKGs as ordered by physicians or licensed independent practitioners.
- Provide clerical support, including patient registration using Meditech and placing orders.
- Work with the Materials Management Department to ensure the unit is stocked with supplies.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- May lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance.
- May push or pull up to 500 pounds with assistance.
- Work is of medium demand, involving walking or standing most of the time.
- Visual and auditory acuity, as well as manual dexterity, are essential.
- May be subjected to unpleasant sights, odors, stressful situations, and hazardous or infectious agents.
- Exposure to limited amounts of radiation, hazardous chemicals, or infectious disease processes is possible.
- Hours may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to departmental requirements.
OSHA Exposure Classification: Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn.
Requirements
- Demonstrated eligibility for employment in the United States.
- High School diploma or equivalent, with proof of certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant.
- Must achieve BLS certification within 60 days of employment.
- Ability to relate and work effectively with others.
- Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for personal growth.
- Verbal and written communication skills in English for interacting with patients, callers, and coworkers.
- Communication skills for safe and effective patient care and documentation standards.
- Computer skills, including word processing and integrated database functions.
- Ability to use office machines and telephone systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
- Ability to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruption.
Prior experience in a medical setting is preferred.
