About the Role

Provides routine resident services using effective, outcome focused services, such as medication and treatment procedures including charting, nourishment, activities of daily living (ADL’s), etc. Documents services and responds to resident needs. Must be licensed in the state of Virginia as a Registered Medication Aide and a Certified Nurse Aide. The Medication Aide provides quality care and assistance with activities of daily living for residents of the community as well as assists with the administration of prescribed medications within the established scope of practice. The Medication Aide encourages all residents to function at their highest level of independence and to participate in community activities.

Schedule

  • PRN positions available on the following shifts: 6:45am–3:15pm, 2:45pm–11:15pm, or 10:45pm–7:15am
  • Minimum requirement: 3 shifts per month, including 1 weekend shift per month
  • Maximum of 29 hours per week

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved Certified Nursing Assistant Program
  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant in Virginia (CNA) – REQUIRED
  • Registered Medication Aide (RMA) in Virginia – REQUIRED
  • CPR/AED certification – REQUIRED
  • Graduate of a medication training program, including insulin module, meeting 54.1-34-8 Code of Virginia Requirement
  • Experience preferred

Job Duties

  • Understands the implications of resident rights regarding medications, treatment decisions and confidentiality
  • Recognizes emergencies and other health-threatening conditions and responds accordingly
  • Identifies medication terminology and abbreviations
  • Implements standard precautions
  • Cleans and disinfects as needed
  • Properly disposes of infectious waste according to state law
  • Reviews administration records and Doctor’s orders
  • Maintains resident medical records while abiding by HIPAA policies and procedures
  • Facilitates resident awareness of medication purpose and effects
  • Demonstrates the five rights of medication administration
  • Follows policy for medication administration
  • Measures and records vital signs, as indicated
  • Assists resident to administer oral medications and documents medication administration
  • Reports to charge nurse and documents a resident’s refusal to take medication
  • Documents medication errors
  • Stores and secures all medications
  • Maintains an inventory of medications
  • Disposes of medications according to pharmacy guidelines
  • If needed, assists residents to administer medications and treatments
  • Assists with ADLs as needed
  • Documents care provided in medical record
  • Attends mandatory in-service education and completes Relias Learning in-services
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Basic conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within medication and nursing assistance, typically acquired through certified program
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills required
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of common medical processes and treatments

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • May include frequent lifting (up to 50lbs)
  • Extensive walking, bending, stooping, standing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks
  • Ability to work inside and outside to effectively make rounds daily throughout the facility and to respond to problems and emergencies
  • Ability to lift and move residents
  • Universal staffing, holiday, inclement weather, and a flexible work schedule are required in health services to meet the needs of the job
  • Exposure to the sights, sounds and odors of a typical long-term care and health care environment serving senior citizens, some with dementia
