About the role
Performs receptionist, certified nursing assistant (CNA), and supply management duties in a hospital unit, with coverage provided to other units as needed.
Responsibilities
- Performs receptionist duties: directing visitors and patients' family members, answering incoming phone calls, addressing visitor questions, and directing physicians and other hospital personnel to locate patients or providers.
- Performs administrative duties: scanning patient charts as directed by Health Information Management, approving open and closed electronic medical record documents, and coordinating ancillary departments for patient care.
- Assists with incoming and outgoing mail.
- Coordinates maintenance and repairs of Nurse's Station equipment (e.g., copier, fax).
- Orders office supplies under the direction of the Director and manages galley supplies, including maintaining orderliness and recording daily refrigerator/freezer temperatures.
- Maintains a working relationship with the BTNRH Dietary Specialist.
- Assists with chart preparation in collaboration with nursing staff and ensures patient rooms are set up for admissions.
- Stocks supply carts and procedure carts in patient rooms, and requests additional supplies from Director(s), Laboratory, and/or operating room as necessary.
- Contacts physician offices to obtain required patient documents.
- Performs point-of-care testing and EKGs as indicated.
- Maintains charge capture for billable supplies.
- Utilizes CNA skills to assist RNs in rooming patients, including obtaining vital signs and reviewing the Patient Handbook with parents.
- Coordinates patient transfers, including preparing transport carts, and assists with routine patient care (feeding, bathing, ambulation, and making beds).
- Organizes the nursing station as needed and follows hospital policies and procedures for Joint Commission readiness.
- Maintains downtime forms.
- Collaborates with the Patient Access Department to register patients admitted or transferring from the unit and assists with discharge follow-up clinic appointments.
- Maintains admission/discharge logbook and census documentation.
- Assists with special projects as assigned.
- Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- CNA certification required.
- BLS certification required.
- Experience utilizing multiple computer systems (e.g., Microsoft, Electronic Health Record).
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year of CNA experience.
Skills
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in dealing with PHI and other sensitive information.
- Effective communication with members of the healthcare team.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in using computers, office equipment (copier, scanner), and other required tools.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize in high-stress, high-volume environments.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Requires moving and lifting a minimum of 50 pounds occasionally (34-66%) and/or up to 20 pounds frequently or constantly.
- Requires turning and positioning patients properly to avoid injury.
- Requires walking and standing most of the time while on duty.
- Audible acuity necessary for taking blood pressures and maintaining patient safety.
- Visual acuity necessary for using computers, reading charts, forms, communications, and patient assessments.
- Work environment includes both indoor and outdoor activities.
- Occasionally subject to noise requiring the worker to shout to be heard.
- Occasionally subject to vibration.
