Shift start and end times are variable. This is an 8-hour, 40-hour-per-week position with weekend requirements as needed. On-call is not required.

Pay range: $140.160 – $233.640 hourly. The stated pay scale reflects the range Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual pay rate and pay grade will depend on years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides a physician perspective at the senior-management level, represents and communicates administrative positions to and from the medical staff, and ensures continuity of the medical-staff organization and its functions. The CMO:

  • Offers medical leadership in collaboration with the senior-management team and interfaces with the medical staff to advance the hospital’s clinical goals and strategic objectives.
  • Champions the hospital’s Quality and Patient Safety priorities.
  • Enhances two-way communication between the Medical Staff and Administration.
  • Attends assigned Medical-Staff Committee meetings to interact with chairs and members, provide administrative input, and resolve or facilitate resolution of Medical-Staff/Administrative issues.
  • Participates in Executive and Medical-Staff meetings to provide physician presence and input into strategic and operational discussions.
  • Acts as liaison for operational issues impacting the medical staff.
  • Aligns and engages the medical staff in delivering the highest standard of medical care.
  • Participates in developing and implementing systems and processes that ensure the highest quality of patient care, safety, and evidence-based care across all disciplines and the hospital.
  • Represents the hospital professionally in the community, state, region, and at national meetings.
  • Provides leadership and accountability in achieving system and hospital vision, quality, safety, financial, and operational goals.

Responsibilities

Quality

  • Partners with clinical and operational leadership to develop and execute a quality plan that achieves quality outcomes.
  • Leads the Quality department, chairs the Quality Council, and participates in pertinent committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics and assigned Medical-Staff department committees.
  • Regularly reviews quality-related data and trends; works with team members to develop and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintains working knowledge of applicable national, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the medical staff, including Joint Commission, Title 22, and CMS conditions of participation.
  • Assists with compliance of patient-care standards defined by professional organizations and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures effective interfaces with external review organizations (e.g., Joint Commission).
  • Provides an environment of clinical excellence and cost improvement that is data-driven.
  • Monitors physician and group practice patterns; presents data analysis and interpretation to physicians and medical and hospital committees for review.
  • Facilitates, intervenes, and moderates all major physician-physician, physician-patient, and physician-staff concerns in collaboration with Risk Management, MEC, and other appropriate Medical-Staff and management-team members.
  • Serves on the PSERT Committee and reviews patient-care events; collaborates with Administration and Medical Staff to prevent occurrences.
  • Supports and establishes a system that assures provision of necessary patient-care services, timely and at the appropriate level of care.
  • Remains abreast of changing health-care systems and their impact on the medical center and professional staff.

Safety

  • Promotes the Sharp HealthCare Patient Safety Program by advocating for safety reporting and championing process changes and system design that reduce safety events.
  • Achieves Culture of Safety survey response rates of 30 % or higher; shares results with staff and uses them in improvement efforts.
  • Establishes processes to monitor hand-hygiene compliance, makes results available to staff, and achieves the organizational target of 80 % or higher.
  • Accountable for ongoing improvements in the reduction of health-care–associated infections.
  • Accountable for working toward top-decile results in CMS publicly reported programs and Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

Service/People

  • Collaborates with the leadership team to achieve “top-box” patient-experience scores in HCAHPS and Press Ganey surveys.
  • Regularly reviews patient-satisfaction survey results, particularly as they relate to the medical staff, and ensures the medical staff is kept aware of results.
  • Provides necessary coaching and counseling to medical and hospital staff to support high patient-satisfaction scores.
  • Establishes and maintains a collaborative working relationship with the medical, nursing, and administrative staff in the hospital and throughout the system.
  • Collaborates with Medical-Staff leadership and administrative leadership to optimize the satisfaction level of the Medical Staff as measured by the annual Physician Satisfaction Survey.
  • Participates in decision-making regarding changes in Medical Directors and, as appropriate, other medical-staff leadership positions.
  • Provides advice and consultative support to medical directors as needed.
  • Collaborates, coordinates, and cooperates with other medical directors within Sharp HealthCare for an organization-wide perspective.

Finance/Growth

  • Partners with the CEO and executive team to ensure the financial health of the organization.
  • Provides consultative input to the CEO and executive team regarding programmatic costs and cost efficiencies.
  • Participates in and promotes cost-savings initiatives.
  • Serves as a resource in monitoring resource consumption and assists with discharge planning and resource-utilization management issues.
  • Provides oversight of physician-documentation issues and coordinates education forums/presentations to ensure adherence to MD-DRG coding requirements.
  • Assists the Executive team in managing physician on-call issues as needed.

Community

  • Represents Sharp Tri-City Medical Center and Sharp Healthcare at appropriate professional organizations.
  • Works cooperatively with the Marketing Department in presenting community health education.
  • Acts as a spokesperson as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD).
  • 10 years of clinical experience.
  • California Physicians and Surgeons License – Medical Board of CA (required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (M.B.A. and/or M.P.H.).
  • Relevant experience in medical-staff organization leadership as a Vice President of Medical Affairs and/or Quality, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Officer, or other senior physician leader in a similar-sized hospital or health system.
  • Board Certified.
