Responsibilities

  • Perform only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, adhering to skill levels commensurate with education, training, or experience and technical abilities.
  • Follow the laboratory’s procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s established quality control policies and document corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct them or notify a supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines as introduced.
  • Perform and document maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed) on instruments and equipment.
  • Review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples; collaboration with other laboratories prior to reporting results is prohibited.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of all ages, from newborn to geriatrics, as required.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • In the absence of a supervisor, may serve as Lead Tech with responsibility for the section or department during a shift.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
  • Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

  • ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1423).
  • Current and valid state license if required by the state where the laboratory is located.

Employment Status: Per Diem. Shift: Variable.
