Cloud Solutions Engineer
GDIT is seeking a Senior Cloud Solutions Engineer to join our National Institutes of Health (NIH) CIT Hosting and Storage Services Program. We are looking for an experienced, customer-focused cloud engineer to design and deliver secure, reliable, and scalable solutions for customers with requirements extending beyond standard cloud infrastructure and platform offerings.
About the role
As a member of our Cloud DevOps team, this engineer will work directly with customers to understand business, application, data, and scientific requirements, translating them into well-designed cloud solutions. The role involves ownership of solutions from discovery and architecture through engineering and delivery, leveraging standard platform capabilities while developing custom Infrastructure as Code, automation, and integrations as needed.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical judgment, consider downstream impacts and tradeoffs of design decisions, and operate as a trusted technical consultant to customers throughout their cloud journey. This role requires obtaining and maintaining a Public Trust (NACI) clearance, including onsite fingerprinting at a designated facility.
Remote working candidates will be considered; however, preference is for candidates to go onsite to Bethesda, MD 3 days per week. Candidates within 60 miles of the customer site may be required to go onsite as needed.
Responsibilities
- Partner directly with customers to discover and document business, application, data, security, and technical requirements, translating them into cloud architectures and actionable engineering plans.
- Design and implement custom solutions in AWS and Azure for application and data hosting, including scientific and research platforms such as REDCap, Posit, and other specialized workloads that do not align with standard IaaS or PaaS offerings.
- Engineer end-to-end cloud solutions incorporating compute, storage, databases, networking, identity and access management, security, monitoring, backup/recovery, application architecture, and other required cloud services.
- Develop and maintain Terraform modules, configuration, scripts, and automation required to provision and manage custom solutions, leveraging standard reusable services and patterns wherever practical.
- Design and integrate DevOps and CI/CD capabilities that support application deployment, infrastructure delivery, security scanning, testing, monitoring, and ongoing lifecycle management.
- Apply sound engineering judgment and second-order thinking to evaluate technical alternatives, dependencies, security risks, operational impacts, scalability, maintainability, and long-term consequences when recommending solutions.
- Independently drive assigned solutions through delivery while collaborating within an Agile Cloud DevOps team, participating in sprint planning, technical design and code reviews, and coordinating with security, infrastructure, application, and other engineering teams as needed.
Requirements
- BS/BA and 8+ years of relevant IT experience, or equivalent experience.
- Strong hands-on AWS and Azure experience across compute, storage, databases, networking, identity, security, monitoring, and related cloud services.
- Experience designing and implementing cloud solutions for applications and data, with knowledge of application architectures, availability, scalability, resiliency, security, and lifecycle requirements.
- Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform, including developing custom modules, leveraging reusable modules, and working within shared Git-based code repositories.
- Experience with cloud networking, identity and access management, security, and DevOps/CI/CD practices, including automated infrastructure and application deployment, testing, security scanning, and monitoring.
- Experience independently owning technical solutions from requirements gathering and architecture through implementation, troubleshooting, documentation, and transition to operations.
- Strong consulting, communication, and analytical skills, with experience engaging customers, translating requirements into technical architectures, evaluating tradeoffs and downstream impacts, and delivering solutions within an Agile sprint-based environment.
- US citizenship is not required, but the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust (NACI) clearance is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience architecting and supporting scientific, research, healthcare, or data-intensive applications in the cloud, including platforms such as REDCap, Posit, or comparable research technologies.
- Experience with containerized and cloud-native architectures, managed cloud services, application modernization, cloud migrations, and automation using Terraform, Ansible, Python, PowerShell, or similar technologies.
- Relevant AWS, Microsoft Azure, Terraform, DevOps, or architecture certifications.
- Experience supporting federal government, healthcare, life sciences, or similarly regulated environments.
Benefits
- Full benefits package including medical, dental, and vision plans, some with Health Savings Accounts.
- 401(k) plan with both pre- and post-tax contribution options and company match.
- Paid time off, including vacation (15 days per year), sick and personal time, and 10 paid holidays per year, prorated based on hire date.
- GDIT Paid Family Leave program providing up to 160 hours of paid leave in a rolling 12-month period for eligible employees.
- Short- and long-term disability benefits, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, personal accident, critical illness, and business travel and accident insurance.
- Flexible work arrangements, including full flex work weeks where possible.
- Paid leave for parental, military, bereavement, and jury duty.
Pay
The likely salary range for this position is $153,000 - $207,000. Salary will be set based on experience, geographic location, and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
Schedule
- Scheduled weekly hours: 40
- Travel required: Less than 10%
- Telecommuting options: Remote work available from any location
