Cloud Engineer, Specialist (AWS/Azure)
About the role
Vanguard’s Data Transmission Services (DTS) team designs, builds, and operates secure, resilient, and scalable integration solutions that enable data exchange between Vanguard and external partners. As Vanguard continues its cloud and modernization journey, DTS is evolving from traditional managed file transfer (MFT) solutions toward cloud-native integration platforms built on AWS. We are seeking an experienced engineer who combines hands-on technical expertise with vision for the future. This individual will lead the design and modernization of enterprise integration solutions, influence architectural direction, mentor fellow engineers, and drive engineering best practices across the Data Transmission Services platform.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and support cloud-based integration and data transmission solutions using AWS services and modern development practices.
- Provide intermediate-level Data Transmission Services (DTS), including the setup, support, monitoring, and troubleshooting of external data transmissions for business clients.
- Diagnose, debug, and resolve complex transmission issues and incidents, ensuring timely restoration of service in line with established service level objectives.
- Develop and maintain automation, tooling, and services that enable secure and reliable data exchange with external partners.
- Implement solutions using infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines to ensure repeatable, scalable, and well-governed deployments.
- Modernize legacy MFT and batch-based integrations toward API-driven, event-based, and serverless patterns where appropriate.
- Partner with internal application teams, security, networking, business, and external partners to design optimal integration architectures.
- Support production data transmission environments, including participation in an on‑call support rotation to maintain the availability and stability of critical transmission services and supporting platforms.
- Adhere to established DTS policies, standards, and operating procedures, and contribute to the creation, review, and enhancement of documentation and runbooks where gaps are identified.
- Influence architectural discussions, technical documentation, and coding standards.
- Ensure solutions meet Vanguard security, risk, and compliance requirements, including encryption, authentication, logging, and monitoring.
- Actively participate in modernization initiatives and proof-of-concepts aligned to Vanguard’s Technology strategy.
- Participate in special projects, and other initiatives and duties as assigned.
- Provide technical guidance, leadership, and mentorship to engineers through design reviews, code reviews, troubleshooting guidance, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that elevate team capabilities.
Requirements
- Experience modernizing legacy MFT or batch-based integrations to cloud-native architectures.
- Familiarity with Axway B2Bi, Sterling Connect: Direct, AWS Transfer Family, or similar platforms, in hybrid or cloud (AWS/Azure) platforms.
- Knowledge of scripting and programming (Python, Shell, Java, SQL).
- Foundational understanding of ITIL Framework and familiarity with ServiceNow or similar platforms.
- Experience building or consuming REST APIs and event-driven integrations.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
- Experience working with mainframe technology.
- Experience working in regulated or security-sensitive environments (financial services a plus).
- Exposure to observability tools (logging, tracing, metrics) in cloud environments.
- Ability to commute to the office (Hybrid 3 days/week).
- Ability to work on-call rotational off-hour coverage.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5+ years related work experience.
- Undergraduate degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
