About the role
We are seeking a Cloud Developer to design, develop, and maintain cloud-based software solutions supporting engineering and scientific projects. The ideal candidate will have expertise in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or similar), strong programming skills (Python, JavaScript, React), and experience with DevOps tools and containerized applications. Responsibilities include building scalable data infrastructure, developing automation and analysis tools, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication, a commitment to Agile development, and the ability to work independently or within diverse teams.
Responsibilities
- Cloud Infrastructure & DevSecOps
- Implement DevSecOps principles to automate development workflows.
- Configure and manage Kubernetes infrastructure.
- Define and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Assist in containerizing new and legacy applications.
- Design and deploy cloud networking infrastructure.
- Manage networking for secure service communication and user access.
- Implement NASA-standard authentication, authorization, and role-based access controls.
- Ensure compliance with MSFC security plans and relevant federal standards.
- Enhance the robustness, reliability, and availability of deployed applications.
- Write and maintain comprehensive documentation for system design and processes.
- Software Development & Data Engineering
- Design and build scalable data pipelines for ingesting, processing, and structuring time series data.
- Apply data lake and data warehouse principles to support efficient data storage and retrieval.
- Integrate with authoritative data catalogs to ensure data discoverability and governance.
- Architect and implement near real-time data analysis solutions.
- Leverage cloud-native technologies to build scalable, maintainable solutions.
- Develop web-based applications for data visualization and automation.
- Maintain thorough documentation for all development and engineering processes.
Requirements
- A degree in software engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited university. Typical experience requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum of 14 years of experience, M.S. with at least 18 years of experience, or B.S. with at least 20 years of experience.
- Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.
- Experience with software engineering, architecture, design, development, testing (unit and integration), documentation, and product delivery.
- Proficiency in cloud environments such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Experience with SQL, database management, and backend data storage concepts.
- Experience in cloud networking, such as deploying applications in a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).
- Frontend web development experience, including JavaScript and the React framework.
- Experience implementing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) data pipelines.
- Familiarity with cloud data lake architecture and data warehouse concepts.
- Experience with containerized applications, Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Understanding of DevOps tools such as GitHub, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Ansible, and Terraform.
- Experience developing cloud-native software solutions.
- Experience with Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming and integration.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
- Experience working in an Agile development environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.

- Physical Requirements
- Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%).
- Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%).
- Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
- Equipment and Machines
- Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
- Attendance
- Normal workday 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job.
- Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
- Other Essential Functions
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%).
