Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate)

About the role

The Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate) supports the Animal Care and Use program at Temple University in support of research initiatives involving animal use. Within the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) department, the Clinical Veterinarian provides professional veterinary care, enforces the humane care and use of research animal colonies, and may serve as acting University Attending Veterinarian in their absence.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on clinical care for all animals under the care of ULAR (e.g., mice, rats, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, aquatics, reptiles).
• Participate in research procedural support, including research-related surgical procedures.
• Perform veterinary exams, diagnostic tests, and maintain the health of the colony.
• Provide care to all research animals in assigned facilities, including observation, diagnosis, treatment, prescription and monitoring of medications, and maintenance of animal health records.
• Supervise technical staff during clinical work and oversee regulatory compliance.
• Consult and train animal users, and provide limited teaching to graduate and professional students as required.
• Perform quality assurance for campus animal facilities.
• Serve as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and other committees as assigned.
• Review (pre- and post-review) animal use protocols and assist investigators in developing research protocols.
• Provide clinical oversight for a variety of species, including preventative health, colony management, medical treatments, general anesthesia, euthanasia procedures, and other duties.
• Ensure care of laboratory animals in a safe, humane, and sanitary manner, including safe handling of animals, materials, and equipment exposed to hazardous agents.
• Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with internal policies, applicable laws, and regulations.

Requirements

• VMD/DVM from an accredited U.S. School of Veterinary Medicine.
• Veterinary licensure in Pennsylvania (or ability to attain license within 3 months of hire).
• Grade T28 (Associate): 0-4 years' experience in lab animal medicine in academic, non-profit, government, or industry settings.
• Grade T29 (Senior): 5+ years' experience in lab animal medicine in academic, non-profit, government, or industry settings.
• Ability to obtain a practitioner's DEA license within 6-9 months of employment.
• Demonstrated experience in providing large animal anesthesia/surgical support services.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

• Willingness to pursue continuous improvement, including additional training and continuing education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of residency in laboratory animal medicine.
• Three or more years of post-doctoral training experience.
• American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility.
• Experience with rodent surgical models, rodent technical procedures, USDA species technical procedures (e.g., sheep, pig, dog, cat), rodent breeding colonies, genetically altered animals, aquatics procedures, and rodent medicine.
