About the role
The Cytogenetics Lab Technologist will perform Cytogenetics analysis, maintain equipment, communicate with clients, and manage laboratory supplies.
Responsibilities
- Complete Cytogenetics analysis of body fluids/tissues to confirm or rule out clinical diagnoses.
- Maintain proficiency in all routine and special cytogenetic techniques and equipment.
- Communicate with hospital personnel, physicians, and patients via phone and email.
- Dispatch biohazardous patient specimens to appropriate laboratories.
- Provide detailed information and assistance regarding test services, fees, and specimen transportation.
- Prepare and submit laboratory purchase orders for supplies and equipment.
- Answer telephone calls and screen visitors/couriers/vendors.
- Maintain laboratory records and statistics, including sample accessioning.
- Manage chemical and equipment inventory, dispose of chemical waste, and culture set up and maintenance.
- Prepare solutions, perform banding techniques, screen and analyze chromosomes, and conduct FISH methodology.
Requirements
- New York State Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or limited permit required.
- One year training in clinical cytogenetics and a minimum of one year experience in clinical and cancer cytogenetic techniques required.
- A Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or life sciences is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- Knowledge of computer skills is essential.
