About the role
The Surgical Counselor provides exceptional care for patients by explaining diagnoses, procedures, and outcomes, and advises on financial matters.
Responsibilities
- Prepare medical charts for surgical evaluations
- Travel to various locations to assist physicians
- Educate patients on new technologies and advancements in cataract surgery
- Obtain prior authorizations from insurance companies
- Schedule surgeries and appointments
- Organize and prepare surgery charts
- Inform patients about pre-admission tests, surgery day details, and follow-up care
- Answer patient and primary care physician inquiries
- Verify medical benefits and discuss costs
- Secure out-of-pocket financial requirements from patients
- Complete consent forms and other necessary documents
- Interface with the billing department
- Relay surgical booking forms and charts to the surgery center
- Build relationships with referring physicians
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desired
- Previous ophthalmology or healthcare experience
- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and organized
- Able to multi-task and meet deadlines
- Willingness to travel to multiple locations
Qualifications
- Mid-level education on ophthalmology
- Typically 2-4 years of experience
