Job Overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team of healthcare scientists working in the Clinical Measurement and Engineering Unit of Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. This post is based primarily in two clinical services, visual electrodiagnostics (VED) and spinal cord monitoring (SCM). This role involves working clinically in outpatient and theatre settings, with a range of teams from multiple specialties (ophthalmology, orthopaedics, anaesthetics). We expect that the successful candidate will be able to develop and lead research and development and quality improvement projects in these services and the wider unit.

Main duties of the job

• Perform VED tests on patients in an outpatient environment and report these investigations clinically
• Provide intraoperative neuromonitoring for patients undergoing spinal surgery
• Contribute to and lead quality improvement and R&D projects in a range of technical and scientific applications, either in one of the home services or by contributing to the unit's wider portfolio of projects, for example through the clinical engineering team

Service-specific training will be provided as required, but an understanding of neurophysiology and clinical experience performing patient investigations is essential. We are looking for a highly motivated person with excellent clinical, scientific and communication skills.

Qualifications & Education

Essential:

• First or second class honours degree in a relevant science or engineering subject
• Appropriate post-graduate degree at master's level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge
• Registered Clinical Scientist, or working towards registration

Desirable:

• Higher degree in a relevant subject

Knowledge & Experience

Essential:

• Specialist in-depth knowledge of relevant anatomy, physiology and pathology
• Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and protocols including infection control
• Understanding of the functioning and safe use of physiological measurement equipment
• Experience of working with patients
• Knowledge of Governance issues including ethical and regulatory considerations
• Up to date knowledge of Trust policies and procedures regarding control of infection

Desirable:

• Knowledge and experience of some of the clinical measurement services offered by the section: visual electro-diagnostic testing, intra-operative monitoring, gait analysis, microvascular assessment and GI physiology
• Experience of working under quality management systems
• Understanding of audit, quality assurance and calibration requirements
• Experience of performing, publishing & presenting research
• Knowledge of study design and medical statistics
• Experience in training and supervision of trainees
• Formal presentations at local, national or international meetings
• Use of library and information resources to find, acquire and disseminate new knowledge
• Leadership qualities
• Able to work independently within professional guidelines
• Interested in working with children
