About the role

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurology is seeking a Clinical Research Nurse 1 to work in Boca Raton, FL. This role ensures the integrity and quality of clinical research studies are maintained in accordance with practice guidelines, federal and sponsor regulations, and institutional policies. The Clinical Research Nurse 1 plays a key role in participant recruitment and achieving research objectives, specifically supporting the research projects of the Comprehensive Center for Brain Health under the supervision of Dr. James Galvin.

Responsibilities

• Assess, troubleshoot, and report problems with data collection to appropriate managing staff.
• Identify desired research outcomes and evaluate and monitor subjects’ responses.
• Conduct initiation visits and register patients in clinical studies.
• Perform study data collection and entry using charts, correspondence, medical records, and relevant communications.
• Identify and procure equipment and supplies needed to fulfill project requirements.
• Educate staff and subjects about protocols, treatment, possible side effects, and complications.
• Collect and handle specimens as required by individual study protocols.
• Prepare and process new research proposals and amendments; continually monitor applications and adverse events.
• Assist with study completion, data lock, study closeout, and archiving of study files to ensure completeness and continuity of all study data.
• Complete ongoing checks of clinical data entered on case report forms to ensure accuracy and revise any discrepancies.
• Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
• Work closely with the Director as part of an interprofessional, transdisciplinary team to provide outstanding, comprehensive care in the clinical research setting.
• Perform standardized scales, vital signs, and anthropometric measurements.
• Perform memory and functional screening or monitoring tools that allow for objective re-evaluation of change in performance and/or function over time.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of medical equipment, including infusion pumps and defibrillators.
• Order, stock, and maintain inventory of emergency medications, oxygen, and other supplies.
• Develop and execute patient emergency response plans when needed.
• Order, stock, and maintain inventory of unit medical supplies.
• Develop and update standard operating procedures as needed.
• Collect and process blood samples per protocol requirements.
• Demonstrate critical nursing judgment to maintain the integrity of the research protocol without compromising patient safety.
• Demonstrate appropriate clinical skills relating to the execution of research protocols, such as determining eligibility, exclusion criteria, identifying need for modifications, and adverse responses.
• Help prepare IRB applications.
• Assist in the development of recruitment strategies and promotional materials.
• Coordinate participant enrollment, determine patient eligibility, and obtain informed consent.
• Create and maintain participant charts and coordinate participant appointments.
• Perform vital signs, neuro checks, EKGs, and blood draws for study participants.
• Collect, organize, and maintain source documentation.
• Ensure the protocol is followed as approved by the IRB.
• Report all adverse events.
• Participate in research activities by assisting in the collection of data and initiating research under supervision as appropriate.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.
• Minimum one (1) year of experience required.
• Valid State of Florida RN license required.
• BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
• HIV certification required.
