About the Unit

D37 is a 33-bed General Medical-Surgical unit that cares for adult patients with a wide range of medical conditions. Typical cases include patients with chronic illnesses experiencing acute exacerbation, as well as newly diagnosed conditions requiring treatment and ongoing management. The unit focuses on addressing acute health concerns while managing chronic conditions to promote overall health and recovery.

Nurses on D37 develop and maintain a broad range of clinical skills while caring for a diverse patient population. The unit provides hands-on experience with advanced procedures and technologies, including:

• IV insertion and management
• Urinary catheterization insertion and management
• Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
• Blood product administration
• Chest tube management
• Central line care
• Enteral feeding tubes
• Telemetry monitoring
• Restraints
• Rectal tube management
• Enemas

Responsibilities

Clinical - Assessment

• Conducts individualized patient assessments, prioritizing data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs within specified timeframes.
• Performs ongoing assessments as determined by the patient’s condition and reprioritizes care accordingly.
• Integrates nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating standards of care and patient outcomes.

Clinical - Planning

• Develops, modifies, and integrates an individualized care plan incorporating the medical plan of care, plans from other disciplines, and standards of care.
• Establishes measurable patient goals in consultation with the patient, family, and healthcare team.

Clinical - Intervention

• Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by providers accurately and timely.
• Delivers therapeutic nursing interventions as established by the individualized plan of care.
• Recognizes potential problems and responds to urgent or emergent risks to the patient.
• Initiates emergency resuscitative measures as appropriate.
• Manages care for a specialty patient population with responsibility and accountability.
• Provides care in a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive manner, preserving patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to ensure appropriate patient care interventions.

Clinical - Evaluation

• Evaluates patient responses to care based on the effectiveness of nursing interventions in relation to established goals.
• Initiates changes in the interdisciplinary care plan based on evaluations.
• Problem-solves with the specialty team to improve patient outcomes.
• Documents patient assessment findings, responses to interventions, and progress toward problem resolution.

Clinical - Patient Education

• Identifies learning needs of patients and families and adapts teaching based on those needs.
• Ensures patients and families demonstrate knowledge within their abilities.
• Communicates with patients and families to identify their needs and include them in the plan of care.
• Supports patient and family determinations concerning treatment.

Self and Peer Learning

• Assesses and meets own learning and professional development needs.
• Maintains current competency in nursing specialty and department requirements.
• Attends required educational programs and may participate in additional workshops.
• Reviews nursing professional publications and establishes personal networks.
• Seeks additional educational opportunities for clinical development.
• Is either ready to learn the charge nurse role or currently functioning in it.

• Makes sound judgments in coordinating increasingly complex patient care demands.
• Supervises delegated care based on personnel abilities and patient acuity.

• Assists in the orientation, instruction, direction, and evaluation of students assigned to the unit.
• Is trainable for or currently functioning in a charge nurse role.

• Participates in data collection for quality assurance activities if assigned by department leaders.
• Identifies and communicates recurring practice concerns in specialty areas and their impact on care.
• Participates in initiatives resulting from nurse-sensitive, quality, and other specialty indicators or unit-based quality metrics.

• May participate in research or evidence-based practice projects.

Requirements

Education

• Minimum: Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing.
• Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Work Experience

• Minimum: At least one year of nursing (RN) experience.

Licenses & Certifications

• Minimum: Registration as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or holds a compact license to practice in Virginia.
• Required: Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Additional Specialty Requirements After Hire: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) according to department standards (waived for 100% remote employees). ACLS is required for the following departments:

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS): Required for Pediatrics according to unit standards.
• Advanced and Pediatric Advanced Life Support: Required for the Emergency Department.

Pay

Salary Range: $31.05 - $48.13 per hour.
