Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, processes the dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical supplies; assists in controlling and directing functions of pharmacy technicians when assigned to the shift. Provides drug information to health care professionals and patients to assist in providing rational drug therapy. Participates in oncall system to provide continuous pharmaceutical services.
What you will do in this role
- Supervises and checks all activities carried out by Pharmacy Technicians.
- Supervises technicians in the filling of physicians’ orders.
- Checks all physician orders for accurate filling prior to delivering to the nursing units.
- Affirms the accurate and prompt delivery of unit-dose medications and controlled substances to hospital inpatients.
- Translates and profiles all orders for intravenous medications into the Meditech System.
- Supervises the admixture and/or admixes all intravenous medications/fluids prepared in the Pharmacy including the accurate and efficient preparation of total parenteral solutions, antibiotics, and other medications for intravenous therapy.
- Maintains appropriate records and inventory on all drugs.
- Provides information to physicians and other staff members on availability of new drugs, warnings on currently marketed drugs, incompatibilities of certain drugs, and contraindications of drugs and other pharmaceuticals.
- Aids in the communication and coordination of pharmacy activities with Nursing Service making recommendations for solutions/procedures in applicable areas.
- Aids in the continual training of and the supervision of all pharmacy and I.V. Technicians.
- Inspects nursing units to monitor the proper storage and distribution of patient floor stock, controlled drugs, and emergency medications.
- Aids the Director in the acquisition, sorting, and reporting of established criteria for the Department of Pharmacy Performance Improvement Program and medication use evaluations.
- Attains/maintains knowledge of the pharmacy computer system from the standpoint as a user of the system and as an advisor to other employees that are involved in the direct application of the system.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy.
Qualifications
- IV Therapy must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date
- Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy
