Responsibilities

• Provide a full range of pharmacy services at the assigned facility and ensure compliance with pharmacy policies and procedures as stated in the Pharmaceutical Services Directive and Guide.
• Manage all pharmaceutical activities including the purchase, inventory, control, and record keeping of all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substances stored in the pharmacy.
• Secure and maintain a current facility DEA Registration Number and maintain necessary legal records on controlled substance items.
• Provide direct care to patients within discipline Scope of Practice and perform functions in accordance with current accepted practice, licensure, certification, credentialing, and granted privileges.
• Provide treatment of persons throughout the life span as appropriate to discipline and facility setting; may respond to and coordinate medical emergencies.
• Read individual prescriptions and determine the name, strength, and dosage of drugs to be dispensed.
• Adjust prescription instructions and drug quantities to correspond to strengths and dosage forms stocked at the medical clinic.
• Type accurate and concise labels that precisely convey provider’s instructions to the patients.
• Fill prescriptions by obtaining the correct drug stock, counting the correct amount of medication, placing the medication in smaller containers, and affixing the prescription label and auxiliary labels.
• Counsel patients on the appropriate use of medication(s), utilizing the patient’s native language if possible, or medication information handouts in the patient’s native language.
• Screen all prescriptions for availability of drug and dosage prescribed; discuss therapeutic options with providers for non-formulary drugs and assist in filling out non-formulary request forms.
• Answer routine inquiries from doctors, nurses, and other staff regarding drug availability, reactions, interactions, and new drugs.
• Package bulk drugs into specific quantities and various sized containers; operate tablet, capsule counting machines, and labeling machines for repackaging.
• Record prepacking information including lot number, expiration date, manufacturer, current date, and initials.
• Fill requisitioned items from other areas of the clinic; make necessary computations if medication is not available in the requested quantity.
• Prepare bulk compounds and package a variety of simple solutions and products for external application.
• Place orders for supplies and track usage to minimize out-of-stock items or excess inventories; research supply vendors for economical sources.
• Receive pharmaceutical supplies, check receipts against requisitions, and report discrepancies to the supplier.
• Inspect stock for re-ordering frequency, current pricing, and proper stock rotation; withdraw outdated drugs and determine proper disposition.
• Maintain general orderliness, cleanliness, and maintenance of pharmacy equipment.
• Participate in monthly and annual inventory of pharmacy services; refill missing pharmacy items used during non-operational hours.
• Inspect and log the temperature of all clinic areas where pharmaceuticals are stored.
• Gather pharmacy statistical information for monthly reports and route them through appropriate leadership.
• Inventory all controlled substances and inspect all clinic areas where pharmaceuticals are stored monthly.
• Supervise work performed by Pharmacy Technician(s).
• Maintain functional proficiency in electronic health records and complete discipline-specific competencies testing annually.
• Complete all initial, annual, and ad-hoc training as required.
• Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with the Privacy Act and HIPAA regulations.
• Adhere to policies, procedures, directives, and accreditation standards; participate in safety, infection control, quality improvement, and patient education programs.
• Attend and participate in general/medical staff meetings.

Requirements

• Degree-issuing institution and/or program must be accredited by an entity recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• B.S. in Pharmacy or Pharm. D. degree from a program accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.
• Minimum of one-year experience as a licensed practicing pharmacist.
• Permanent, full, and unrestricted pharmacist license in the state where the duty station is located; must maintain license status during employment.
• BLS for Healthcare Providers® certification through the American Heart Association®.
• Expert knowledge of pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacy management in a clinic/infirmary setting.
• Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, including generic, chemical, and trade names, Latin abbreviations, dosage forms, drug strengths, formulations, and English-Metric equivalents.
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment; utilize telephonic interpreter/translation services if needed.
• Ability to adapt to sudden changes in schedules and flexibility in work requirements.
• Proficient communication skills in English (verbal and written) to develop rapport with patients, co-workers, and stakeholders.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Proficiency in navigating electronic health records, web-based training, and communications.
• Knowledge of and moderate proficiency in common Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).
• Knowledge of HIPAA/Privacy Act regulations regarding confidentiality of patient medical records and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

On-call Requirements

This full-time position requires availability telephonically during non-duty hours and may require response during emergency activations, as the facility operates 24/7/365.

Physical Demands

This work requires some physical exertion, including long periods of standing, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities, and recurring lifting of moderately heavy patients or equipment.

Citizenship Requirements

The Prime Contract requires employees to be United States citizens or foreign citizens legally authorized to work in the United States. Employment eligibility will be verified using the E-Verify system in accordance with FAR 52.222-54.
