The Clinical Nursing Student provides direct patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) or designated healthcare professional, following federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies and procedures. This role offers clinical experience through job shadowing and hands-on care delegated by the RN.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the RN in applying the nursing process and developing critical thinking skills to ensure quality patient care.
  • Seeks educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking.
  • Provides basic patient care, including vital signs, personal hygiene, mobility, and unit-based specialty duties.
  • Acts as a liaison between the patient and nurse to report changes or concerns.
  • Delivers high-level customer service to patients, families, visitors, and employees.
  • Documents patient care accurately, precisely, and in a timely manner when applicable.
  • Participates in hand-off/report of pertinent patient and departmental information.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency is validated.
  • Participates in patient data collection and documentation (e.g., vital signs, intake/output, changes in patient condition).
  • Assists with patient hygiene and activities of daily living, including ambulation, feeding, hydration, and elimination.
  • Utilizes clinical technology as applicable.
  • Escalates concerns through the appropriate chain of command.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Currently enrolled in a nursing program and has completed one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation (required).
  • Completion of the first clinical rotation as a Nursing Student.
  • Recent experience in acute care and/or long-term care facility (preferred).

Qualifications

  • BLS certification (preferred).
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).

Skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly with healthcare team members.
  • Understanding and ability to follow directions from the healthcare team.
  • Knowledge of patient and healthcare safety standards and regulations (e.g., falls, skin breakdown, suicide prevention, environment of care).
  • Understanding of infection prevention and transmission-based precautions.
  • Ability to work effectively within team dynamics.
  • Compassionate, relationship-based approach to care.
  • Accountability for completing assigned tasks.
  • Critical thinking and advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of the nursing process.
  • Professionalism in all activities.

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including:

  • Neonates (0-4 weeks)
  • Infant (1-12 months)
  • Pediatrics (1-12 years)
  • Adolescents (13-17 years)
  • Adults (18-64 years)
  • Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Working Conditions

  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
  • Potential exposure to physical altercations, verbal abuse, or physical restraints.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions, high noise levels, bright lights, dust, or hazardous substances.
  • Exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Periods of constant interruptions or working alone.
  • General office environment.
  • Required car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Long-distance or air travel as needed (not to exceed 10% travel).
