Clinical Nurse Specialist RN

Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region seeks a Clinical Nurse Specialist who partners with the operational manager to ensure nursing staff delivers safe and effective care. The role encompasses the five subcomponents regulated by the California Board of Registered Nursing: Leadership, Consultation, Research, Education, and Clinical Practice.

Responsibilities

• Develops specialty competency criteria for outcome monitoring of staff.
• Assists in interviewing staff and provides input into evaluations regarding clinical competence; participates in creating, implementing, and following up on action plans for professional development and recommends terminations when appropriate.
• Conducts cost/benefit analysis of new clinical technologies, resulting in recommendations for implementation and budgets.
• Provides coaching and counseling to nursing staff and other healthcare providers.
• Participates in 24-hour clinical leadership by developing standards of practice, policies, and procedures for a specialty patient population consistent with professional practice standards.
• Partners with clinical and operational managers to implement methods and processes supporting change in nursing practice, care programs, and clinical innovation to achieve improved patient/family outcomes.
• Evaluates clinical practice in specialty areas to ensure community/professional standards are met.
• Manages high-risk patients in the specialty area to achieve safe, high-quality, cost-effective outcomes.
• Rounds with the multidisciplinary team in the specialty area (including community needs assessments).
• Evaluates policies and procedures for clinical nursing practice in the specialty area, integrating evidence from systematic reviews.
• Facilitates multidisciplinary collaboration based on clinical needs of patients/families related to the specialty area.
• Participates in outcomes research and evidence-based practice projects.
• Identifies clinical quality indicators for specialty populations.
• Conducts systematic reviews in the specialty area.
• Implements methods and processes to sustain change in nursing practice, programs of care, and clinical innovation.
• Actively involved with specialty-specific professional organizations, including leadership roles and conference participation.
• Develops, implements, coordinates, and evaluates specialty education programs for patients, families, and nursing staff, including community nurses.
• Leads multidisciplinary project teams.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates successful projects using scientific operations management principles.
• Investigates and resolves patient/family/member concerns regarding nursing care delivery.
• Develops, monitors, and supervises policies integrating business and organizational plans in operations.
• Ensures patient care and quality standards comply with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, as well as departmental policies, utilization, and clinical performance standards.
• For Comprehensive Stroke Centers:
  • Supports delivery of evidence-based acute stroke assessment and management.
  • Provides expert nursing consultation and practice oversight.
  • Develops and delivers acute stroke continuing education programs.
  • Participates in performance improvement (PI) processes.
  • Participates in comprehensive stroke center research.

Requirements

• Minimum three (3) years of experience in the area of specialty.
• Clinical master’s degree in nursing, in the area of specialization.
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Clinical Nurse Specialist Certificate (California).
• Registered Nurse License (California).
• Basic Life Support certification.
• Demonstrated clinical expertise in the area of specialty.
• Recent project management experience.
• Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Clinical Nurse Specialist experience.

Pay

$73.74 - $90.53 per hour. Kaiser Permanente offers a market-competitive total rewards package, and pay is based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate’s years of relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.

Schedule

• Full-time, standard worker location onsite.
• Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
• Shift: Day (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri).
• Working hours: 06:15 AM - 02:45 PM.
