Clinical Nurse Specialist - Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT

About the role

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who serves as an oncology and BMT nursing clinical expert, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the nursing staff and teams at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital (BCH).

Responsibilities

• Consults and collaborates with department/unit leaders and healthcare professionals to improve care.
• Leads health system teams to advance the clinical practice of nurses and improve patient outcomes.
• Designs, implements, and evaluates programs and initiatives within clinical practice domain that align with the organization's strategic plan priorities, regulatory agency requirements, and the nursing department’s strategic plan priorities.
• Ledesigns and evaluates innovative educational programs for patients, families, and groups.
• Provides mentorship for new skill acquisition, leadership, and to support professional development of the nursing staff.
• Partners with the Nursing Quality & Analytics, Nurse Professional Development, Clinical Practice, and Research & Scholarship teams and other nurse leaders to meet department and health system strategic goals to advance nursing practice at UCSF.
• Applies current evidence-based knowledge and skills for assessing, diagnosing, planning care for, and evaluating the plan of care for a specialty patient population.
• Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team using the nursing process to integrate the nursing perspective into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family.
• Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a select population of patients/families.
• Facilitates care coordination and transitions for complex and vulnerable patients with oncology care needs.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical RN experience in the specialty area.
• Master's degree from an accredited Nursing program.
• In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient/family educational consulting and resources.
• Advanced knowledge of skills for conducting evidence-based practice, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.
• Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, providers, ancillary services and departments, and outside agencies as required.
• Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.
