About the Role

This faculty position with advanced practice specialization (nurse-midwife) involves clinical service, education, and service activities across the School of Nursing's missions. The primary clinical site is Hillsboro Medical Center, an OHSU Partner community hospital. Practice is the core component of this FTE assignment.

Clinical Activities

  • Provide session-based clinics and inpatient coverage on labor and delivery, including nights and holidays
  • Provide supplementary coverage of labor and delivery call when permanent faculty are ill, in retreat, traveling professionally, on vacation, or on leave
  • Provision of clinical midwifery services to patients in the faculty practice during both day and night shifts

Education Activities

  • Clinical education and supervision of graduate nurse-midwifery students and other OHSU learners in the provision of services to patients in faculty practices
  • Midwifery students are on call with clinical faculty approximately 90% of the time

Other Activities

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or Doctoral Degree in nursing required; Doctoral Degree preferred
  • AMCB certification as a nurse-midwife required
  • Oregon RN license required
  • Oregon nurse-midwifery license required
  • Current CPR card and NRP certification required
  • Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practice in full-scope midwifery for a minimum of two years; three years is preferred

Working Conditions

  • Frequent interruptions in an environment of frequent change and fluctuations
  • May be exposed to excessive auditory and visual stimulation
  • May be required to attend out-of-town conferences according to School of Nursing travel and reimbursement policies
  • May be exposed to body fluids, tissue, possible radiation exposure, and infectious processes
  • Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed
  • Able to use all appropriate patient care equipment and office equipment within work area
  • Midwives are responsible for independently managing their breaks in coordination with patient care demands
  • Due to the unpredictable nature of labor and delivery, meal or rest periods may need to be delayed when one or more patients require immediate attention
  • The ability to prioritize patient care while managing personal needs in a dynamic clinical environment is essential

Physical Requirements

  • Standing: On concrete, vinyl, or carpeting up to 4 hours per day and intermittently
  • Sitting: Chair or stool continuous up to 8 hours per day and intermittently
  • Changing Position: Intermittently, as needed
  • Walking: Intermittently up to 4 hours per day on concrete, vinyl, and carpeting
  • Carrying: Up to 50 pounds (supplies, equipment, books, papers, etc.) for intermittent periods and distances
  • Lifting: Up to 50 pounds (patients, equipment, supplies, books, etc.) intermittently throughout the day
  • Pushing/Pulling: Up to 100 pounds, intermittent, throughout the day
  • Bending: From the waist and knees, frequently throughout the day
  • Reaching/Handling: Fine manipulation, repetitive, gross motor requiring full ROM in upper extremities, including overhead reaching
  • Twisting: All ROM required, intermittent periods, throughout the day
  • Climbing: Staircase, intermittently throughout the day

Schedule Expectations

  • Nurse-midwives can be expected to be assigned to work in the ambulatory and inpatient setting
  • Inpatient midwifery practice is scheduled in shifts and includes nights, weekends, and holidays
