Clinical Nurse Manager - Children's Hospital - Pediatric ICU

Provides leadership and direction for staff to support the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the hospital. Accountable for 24-hour leadership of nursing unit(s), including patient safety, quality of care, staff performance, budget management, and clinical development. Collaborates with nursing colleagues, physician leaders, and ancillary departments to align with hospital goals and decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of unit management, including patient safety, quality of care, and staff performance.
  • Prepare and manage operational and capital budgets.
  • Provide mentorship for Clinical Staff Leaders and act as a professional role model.
  • Participate in hospital committees and support integration of healthcare technology.
  • Monitor and implement quality metrics (e.g., CLABSI, PRC, HCAHPS).
  • Collaborate with Colleges of Nursing to foster positive learning environments for students.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies (e.g., TJC/DNV).
  • Conduct daily leadership rounding and ensure hourly rounding by staff.
  • Manage patient/family perception of care through service recovery efforts.
  • Oversee recruitment, retention, and performance reviews, including coaching and progressive discipline.
  • Ensure ongoing education and mandatory training for staff.
  • Maintain productivity (98-100%) by flexing staffing based on census and acuity.
  • Monitor timekeeping (KRONOS) and enforce time/attendance policies.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, executive leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Support community outreach programs (e.g., health fairs, events).
  • Role model professional behavior and foster a healthy work environment.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; ASN required, BSN preferred.
  • Master’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Five or more years of clinical experience with evidence of leadership abilities; at least 3 years in specialty area.
  • Current Tennessee nursing license (or multistate license from a compact state within 3 months of hire).
  • BLS certification (completed prior to unit assignment and maintained).
  • PALS certification (kept current).
  • Certification in area of specialty.
