About the Role

The Staff Nurse Leader oversees clinical functions related to the delivery of patient care, the quality of nursing practice, and the standards of care for the assigned shift. Coordinates patient care activities by directing staff and functions on the unit while maintaining clinical nursing practice skills and unit-specific expertise. Performs professional nursing duties that incorporate the psychomotor and age-appropriate cognitive skills of the patient/family/significant other to assess, plan, intervene, and advocate for the patient on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care. Provides break relief coverage for the shift. Troubleshoots and resolves issues as they arise. Functions as a role model and clinical resource to staff and patients.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional nursing duties incorporating psychomotor and age-appropriate cognitive skills to assess, plan, intervene, and advocate for patients.
• Provide break relief coverage for the shift.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise.
• Function as a role model and clinical resource to staff and patients.

Requirements

• Understanding of applicable regulatory requirements.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Demonstrated leadership skills by a minimum of four points in leadership roles/responsibilities within the last three years, which may include:
  • Leadership of a project team with effective project outcome and implementation.
  • Advanced degree (MSN) with a focus in leadership.
  • Relief PCC.
  • Qualified Preceptor.
  • Leadership of a Practice Council or in a professional organization.
  • House Supervisor.
  • Membership in a professional development program, Quality Councils, and/or PI Teams.
  • Skin Prevalence Nurse.
  • Teaching a class/skills lab or acting as a Clinical instructor.
  • Success as an EPIC Superuser.
• Minimum of 4 years of recent clinical nursing experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
• Demonstrated competency caring for pediatric patients.
• Complete understanding of patient classification system and staffing requirements for the patient population.
• All external candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• ANCC recognized RN certification uniquely applicable to this specific unit (general certifications, such as WCC, will not be acceptable for meeting this requirement).

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in a leadership role.
• Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
