Hourly pay range: $61.740 – $90.160 (minimum – midpoint – maximum). Placement within the range is based on years of RN experience as defined by the collective bargaining agreement between Sharp HealthCare and Sharp Professional Nurses Network, United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals, NUHHCE, AFSME, AFL-CIO.

Shift: 6:30 PM – 7:00 AM, 12-hour shifts (12/36 schedule). On-call required; every-other-weekend commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect nursing services to patients and families.
  • Use systematic planning, timely information exchange, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and patient/family to coordinate care.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage multiple patient needs and aspects of care, actively communicating with the care team to plan patient care.
  • Utilize the nursing process and critical thinking to provide patient care that is individualized, goal-directed, and consistent with current safety standards, incorporating mind, body, and spirit.
  • Identify actual or potential problems, continuously evaluate interventions, and adjust the plan as patient and family needs change.
  • Prioritize demand for resources, collaborate with others to meet individualized patient needs, and make appropriate referrals based on assessments.
  • Act as a preceptor/teacher for other nurses on applying the nursing process with unit-specific populations.
  • Implement safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with complex needs due to multi-system disease or treatment complications.
  • Document care per department and entity guidelines, ensuring comprehensive, detailed, and concise records that reflect a critical-thinking and problem-oriented approach.
  • Serve as a resource for staff in managing unit-specific documentation issues.
  • Delegate and assign care delivery processes, ensuring clear communication of expectations and appropriate supervision levels.
  • Analyze physician orders for appropriateness and question when necessary.
  • Support and assist coworkers, provide positive feedback, and offer constructive criticism in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Provide unit-specific information to students, floats, travelers, and registry personnel, documenting appropriately.
  • Seek opportunities to improve work processes and systems, and assist coworkers as needed.
  • Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, anticipating and addressing barriers (e.g., spiritual, cultural, language, or communication).
  • Analyze social and cultural variables to adapt nursing interventions to meet diverse needs.
  • Serve as a patient advocate by removing obstacles, supporting needs and wants, and interpreting between patient and physician.
  • Provide age-appropriate patient education to facilitate recovery, self-care, end-of-life care, health maintenance, promotion, and wellness.
  • Coordinate transfer and discharge planning and teaching in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop, identify, and revise patient education materials.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in teaching based on learner needs and adult learning principles.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing school.
  • 1 year of clinical experience (RNs with less than 12 months experience will complete new grad requirements).
  • Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license – CA Board of Registered Nursing.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) certification.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (employee provides certificate).

Skills

  • Independently perform the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) for patients with overt and subtle needs across the care continuum, adhering to unit standards.
  • Provide safe nursing care for patients in complex situations with some assistance and supervision.
  • Demonstrate competency in unit skills and some advanced skills; may teach skills competencies.
  • Coordinate patient care administered by other members of the care team.
  • Assume responsibility as relief charge nurse and assist with preceptorship/professional development of new nurses and students.
  • Use common equipment and medications safely; consult others when unfamiliar.
  • Recognize inconsistencies in patient care and manage potential complications.
  • Demonstrate consistent organization, prioritization of workload, and confident management of emergency situations.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and comply with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior through participation in unit activities and committees as appropriate.
  • Delegate, assign, and communicate care expectations to team members, teaching skills as necessary.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching/coaching strategies to assist families through the disease process/experience.
  • Promote clinical effectiveness, efficient resource use, and quality care in the practice setting.
  • Transfer knowledge, mentor others, and improve clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate complex problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
