CLINICAL LECTURER

This one-year Advanced Training position in aortic surgery begins July 1, 2027, as a Clinical Lecturer (faculty) role in the Department of Cardiac Surgery.

About the role

The trainee will gain comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and planning of specialized aortic and advanced cardiothoracic operations, along with technical proficiency in performing these procedures. The role encompasses preoperative evaluation, operative management (both open and endovascular), postoperative care, and long-term follow-up within a multidisciplinary academic environment.

Responsibilities

• Treat aortic disease (aneurysms and dissection) using open and endovascular techniques.
• Provide preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative care for complex adult surgical conditions, including major thoracic aortic surgery and high-risk cardiac surgery.
• Serve as surgical first assist on complex aortic procedures under the direction of the medical director and other cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons.
• Train other cardiothoracic surgery residents on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic disease.
• Interpret and assess diagnostic imaging studies.
• Participate in both emergent and elective aortic and adult cardiac procedures.
• Independently complete critical portions of complex aortic procedures (e.g., key anastomoses, re-operative sternotomy).
• Engage in additional education and scholarly activities as directed by the medical director to support the mission of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
• Attend mandatory teaching conferences, including didactic sessions, simulator labs, journal clubs, and morbidity and mortality conferences.

Qualifications

• Completion of an American Board of Thoracic Surgery approved training program in cardiothoracic surgery.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible via the pathways stipulated by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
• Eligibility for a medical license in the state of Michigan.
• US Citizenship, US Permanent Residency (Green Card), or eligibility for H-1B sponsorship.
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
