CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels (CSRH-NB), located in downtown New Braunfels, is a full-service, 94-private bed facility equipped with innovative medical technology and procedures. Services include an Outpatient Imaging Center, orthopedic and surgical services, rehabilitation, a renovated birthing center with 24/7 neonatal coverage, emergency care, wound care/hyperbaric center, 3D mammography, and comprehensive heart care from diagnostics to open-heart surgery.

About the role

This position performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures, including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, calculating and reporting results, quality control, instrument operation and maintenance, and assisting in developing new procedures and protocols. The role may also involve phlebotomy and other patient-oriented tasks.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the assigned primary section, considering age or sex-specific values.
• Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs on laboratory instrumentation and equipment; notifies Bio-med as needed.
• Cross-trains in other laboratory sections as required.
• Ensures adherence to the laboratory’s quality control program.
• Calculates, enters, and verifies results of laboratory procedures.
• Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Provides notification and documentation of critical laboratory values.
• Processes patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, with attention to minimal pediatric specimen volumes when required.
• Participates in evaluating, developing, and implementing new or updated testing procedures and protocols.
• Demonstrates competence in assigned patient care responsibilities, adapting methods to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs of patients.

• Completes all required compliance and regulatory tasks and follows applicable policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (including U.S. Military laboratory training courses of at least 50 weeks), or education evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS or other HHS-approved organizations.
• One year of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or an accredited laboratory within the last 5 years (required if not a graduate of an approved program).

Qualifications

• Certification as MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS.
• If certification has an expiration date, it must be maintained and kept current.
• State licensure required for Louisiana.
• New graduates must be board-certified or eligible (must complete board certification within one year of hire, except in Louisiana).
