Responsibilities

  • Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions for test system deviations.
  • Identify and address problems affecting test performance, notifying supervisors as needed.
  • Conduct high-complexity microbiology testing using manual and automated methods, as well as testing in other department areas where licensed and competent.
  • Perform and document maintenance on instruments and equipment (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed).
  • Review patient results for accuracy before reporting.
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are handled identically to patient samples, without collaboration with other laboratories prior to reporting.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
  • Serve as the Micro Tech in-charge during shifts if the supervisor is unavailable.
  • Complete other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

  • Current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license or limited state CLS license as a Microbiologist Specialist (if required by state).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).

Qualifications

  • CLS/MT generalist with 1 year of microbiology experience or Microbiologist Specialist preferred.

Pay

The current compensation range for this role is $56.68 per hour. The exact starting compensation will be determined based on factors such as skillset, experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
