Clinical Laboratory Scientist

About the role

This position is accountable for performing clinical laboratory testing, following all applicable policies and procedures. The role involves independently performing moderate to highly complex clinical tests, preparing reagents or media, stock solutions, standards, and controls, and evaluating new reagents or controls based on standard criteria.

Responsibilities

• Perform newly introduced tests to the laboratory that require defined skills.
• Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria.
• Calculate results utilizing testing data by means of manual or computerized procedures and accurately enter results.
• Check computer review reports to monitor accurate reporting of laboratory results.
• Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times of results.
• Evaluate the acceptability of routine and complex analyses prior to releasing patient reports.
• Recognize and take appropriate action in response to critical values or unusual or unexpected results, and document actions taken.
• Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
• Evaluate the results of instrument performance checks and perform linearity, accuracy, and precision checks as required.
• Perform Quality Control and calibrations, evaluate results, and initiate corrective actions when test systems do not meet established criteria.
• Accurately perform and record proficiency testing.
• Detect and correct technical and operational problems, notifying the supervisor and contacting manufacturer or field service support as needed.
• Ensure accurate tracking and labeling of reagents and supplies.
• Maintain a safe and neat work area.
• Demonstrate effective two-way communication with staff, management, suppliers, and customers.
• Actively participate in staff meetings and Quality Improvement meetings as assigned.
• Take on additional business-related responsibilities or projects, such as evaluating new techniques, method comparison, cost analysis, and writing technical procedures.
• Follow all required procedures for safety, environmental, and infection control.
• Collect and dispose of waste in proper receptacles.
• Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity.
• Provide direct supervision and training to unlicensed staff in proper performance of procedures.
• Maintain professional growth through continuing education to meet California state licensure requirements.
• Answer phones, transfer calls, and take accurate messages.
• Comply with all health and safety policies and use personal protective equipment.

Requirements

• BS in medical technology or other life/physical sciences from an accredited college or university.
• Zero to three years of direct experience in a laboratory setting.
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including frequent simple grasping, reaching, and fine manipulation.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods.
• Good eye and hand coordination.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Strong typing skills (desirable).
• Other automation skills (helpful).
• CLS License.

The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: 1 to 10 pounds frequently, 11 to 25 pounds occasionally, and 26 to 50 pounds seldom. Objects exceeding 50 pounds require assistance.

Schedule

Wednesday to Monday, 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
