Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Central Maine Healthcare is an integrated healthcare delivery system serving 400,000 people living in central, western, and midcoastal Maine. Responsibilities
- Perform only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, as outlined under CFR 493.1425, 493.1495, and 493.1463, with a degree of skill commensurate with education, training, or experience and technical abilities.
- Adhere to the laboratory’s procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follow the laboratory’s established quality control policies and document corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
- Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct them or notify the immediate supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
- Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using both manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines as introduced.
- Perform and document maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed) on instruments and equipment.
- Review the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting.
- Recognize age-specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples; collaboration with other laboratories prior to reporting results is prohibited.
- Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics, if required.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
- In the absence of a supervisor, may serve as Lead Tech with responsibility for the section or department during a shift.
- May be assigned responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
- Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager or director.
Requirements
- ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1423).
- Current and valid state license if required by the state where the laboratory is located.
Pay
A reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $29.75 to $41.54 per hour. The exact starting compensation will be determined based on factors such as skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
