Position Summary
A Clinical Laboratory Technologist / Cytotechnologist at Stony Brook Medicine provides clinical services to the patient population, interacts professionally with various healthcare professionals, and maintains safety standards. They examine cytology specimens using a microscope to determine if the cellular changes are benign, neoplastic, or malignant. The findings are communicated to the Pathologist, leading to therapeutic decisions and follow-up monitoring.
Duties
- Screen Cytology specimens (Gynecologic and Non-Gynecologic, including FNA’s) to determine if they require referral to the Pathologist.
- Schedule and conduct Rapid Onsite Evaluation of FNA or biopsy procedures to assess specimen adequacy.
- Obtain patient history relevant to the final cytologic diagnosis using Copath, Cerner/PowerChart.
- Correlate microscopic findings with concurrent and/or prior related surgical pathology, flow cytometry, and other clinical lab data/results.
- Prepare written cytologic reports using standard terminology specific to organ systems, documenting immediate assessments, and communicating with clinicians.
- Apply appropriate billing codes for each case.
- Process specimens for microscopic evaluation according to established policies and procedures.
- Participate in Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs.
- Participate in Proficiency Testing and Continuing Education.
- Work with Pathology/Cytology residents and fellows.
Requirements
- Baccalaureate Degree with formal training from an accredited school of Cytotechnology.
- NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility, including provisional/limited permit eligibility with 0-2 years demonstrated relevant experience (SL-1).
- NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility, including provisional/limited permit eligibility with 3-5 years demonstrated relevant experience (SL-2).
- NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility, including provisional/limited permit eligibility with a minimum 6 years demonstrated relevant experience (SL-3).
- Pass the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) registry exam (CT, ASCP) and be a registered Cytotechnologist with NYSED and have a NYSED license in Cytotechnology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of active practice as a Cytotechnologist.
- Experience in performing Rapid Onsite Evaluation during FNA/biopsy procedures and/or experience with cytopathology related research projects.
- Specialist in Cytotechnology certification, SCT (ASCP).
