Clinical Lab Technologist (Core Lab, Chemistry & immunology)

About the role

The Clinical Lab Technologist performs specialized technical analyses of blood specimens to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases at Westchester Medical Center. Responsibilities include ensuring proper receipt, recording, grouping, and labeling of specimens, as well as communicating test results to attending physicians.

Responsibilities

• Performs various types of clinical analyses in the core laboratory, including Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Special Hematology, manual testing, and Coagulation on blood specimens, urine, body fluids, and other specimen types.
• Conducts tests such as Chemistry panels, thyroid testing, therapeutic drugs and drugs of abuse, complete blood count (CBC) with differential, other hematology testing, Urinalysis with microscopic, PT/PTT testing, ROTEM analysis, and other clinical tests.
• Interprets test results, reviews, and verifies result reports.
• Operates automated or specialized equipment and performs maintenance or troubleshooting as needed.
• Confers with attending or referral physicians, nursing staff, or other providers on test results, ensuring immediate notification when critical limits of specified test results are exceeded.
• Provides technical assistance throughout the core laboratory.
• Participates in validation studies for new procedures and equipment.
• Performs quality control testing, documents remedial actions for detected deficiencies and defects, and ensures proper preparation, storage, and evaluation of reagents.
• May provide training to new technologists or technicians in the core laboratory.
• Reads, understands, and follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for tests, processes, and testing platforms.
• Reports and escalates issues to the department supervisor.
• Performs testing on proficiency samples in the same manner as patient samples.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent experience.
• Either:
  • Possession of a license and current registration as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department; or
  • Possession of a limited permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or restricted license to practice clinical laboratory technology at Westchester Medical Center issued by the New York State Education Department.
• Good knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation, and safety precautions in medical technology.
• Knowledge of core laboratory testing and platforms, calibration, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment.
• Ability to understand, follow, and explain medical and technical instructions.
• Ability to provide technical consultation to physicians and nurses.
• Ability to implement quality control standards.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position.
• Proficiency in using computer applications such as LIS systems, spreadsheets, word processing, email, and database software.
• Thoroughness, dependability, accuracy, sound professional judgment, and physical condition commensurate with the requirements of the position.

0-2 years of experience as a clinical lab technologist is preferred.
