Clinical Lab Scientist-Transfusion

About the role

The Clinical Lab Scientist-Transfusion performs and interprets moderate and high complexity tests, reports results, and prepares blood products following standard operating procedures and current Good Manufacturing Practices, under general supervision. Monitors pending lists and meets or exceeds turn-around time goals for test production and result reporting. Performs instrument and equipment calibration, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Serves as a technical resource including problem solving, troubleshooting, interpreting/consulting, and verifying specimen quality and test results. Serves as a preceptor/mentor to students, residents, and staff. Each CLS only performs those tests for which they are authorized and have demonstrated the required skill commensurate with education, training, and technical abilities.

Responsibilities

• Perform and interpret moderate and high complexity tests in the Transfusion Service.
• Report results and prepare blood products following SOPs and cGMP.
• Monitor pending lists and meet turn-around time goals.
• Perform calibration, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment.
• Provide technical consultation, problem solving, and result interpretation.
• Precept/mentor students, residents, and staff.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field required.
• Minimum three years of experience in high complexity, computerized clinical laboratory as licensed CLS preferred.
• Experience with automated Blood Bank testing instruments.
• Experience with smart blood dispensing fridges preferred.
• Minimum one year of Blood Bank only experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of medical lab SOPs, software, and equipment.
• Ability to perform complex clinical lab tests and interpret and analyze data to determine clinical significance of results.
• Ability to use and maintain specialized lab equipment.
• Ability to articulate logical and well-founded arguments supporting conclusions; excellent dexterity and analytical skills.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English with professional quality; use of computer and software programs; operation/troubleshooting of basic office equipment.
• Ability to communicate positively and effectively; enforce policies; work calmly under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate.
• Ability to think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments; organize and prioritize workload; recall information accurately; pay close attention to detail.
• Ability to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for conversation; identify sounds associated with the workplace/patient care; see adequately to read screens, medical records, and written documents; discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications

• California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist MTA required.
• Specialist in Blood Banking SBB (ASCP) preferred.

Shift time is 1500–2330; may vary slightly depending on departmental needs.

May be eligible for a $9,000 recruitment incentive bonus based on eligibility requirements.
