About the role
Perform high-complexity clinical laboratory procedures in bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, and parasitology. Exercise independent judgment and assume responsibility for daily department operations, including assisting the supervisor in evaluating and developing new procedures and training staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform all microbiology procedures, including bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, and parasitology.
- Participate in the development of new techniques and procedures.
- Evaluate and solve problems related to specimen collection and processing.
- Demonstrate ability to make regular and continuous decisions impacting people, costs, and quality of service.
- Assume full responsibility for valid results and review processes.
- Oversee mycology and mycobacteriology areas, including proficiency testing, quality control, and policy/procedure development.
- Ensure familiarity with laws and regulations from state and federal agencies, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
- Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the supervisor.
- Assist in developing in-service and continuing education programs for employees.
- Train and orient new employees, providing guidance and direction to support personnel.
- Develop and update laboratory procedures as needed.
- Adjust shift hours to cover absences and vacations.
- Assist in specimen processing and setup as needed.
- Work independently.
- Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory computer systems for ordering, reporting, verifying results, and handling downtime procedures.
- Perform quality control, calibration, and preventive maintenance on instruments; troubleshoot malfunctioning systems.
- Differentiate and resolve technical, instrument, or physiologic causes of unexpected test results; institute corrective actions.
- Process samples and orders based on physician requests.
- Manage inventories and maintain adequate supplies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of age-specific care for infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations, including safety measures, normal physiological values, and effective communication.
- Incorporate HPMC’s mission of “quality care with compassion and respect” into daily performance.
- Communicate problems or concerns to the supervisor.
- Respond appropriately to priority specifications for tests.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in biological science or a related field.
- Three to five years’ experience in a clinical laboratory.
- Two years’ recent experience in bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, and parasitology.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to work in a union environment.
Qualifications
- MT (ASCP) certification.
- California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
- Current Los Angeles County Fire Card (within 30 days of employment).
- Assault Response Competency (ARC) certification (within 30 days of hire).
Schedule
- Shift: Days, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM.
- Shift Hours: 8 hours per day.
- Type: Full-Time (FTE: 1.0).
