About the role
UP Health System Portage, a 36‑bed acute care hospital in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is part of Lifepoint Health. The Clinical Lab Scientist will follow standardized procedures, prepare and analyze specimens, operate laboratory equipment, and ensure quality and accuracy in testing to support patient care.
Responsibilities
- Follow standardized procedures and prepare samples for testing.
- Operate laboratory equipment in a high‑quality, effective manner.
- Analyze test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits; report and document results per organizational standards.
- Perform automated tests using computerized instruments and automated equipment.
- Run tests and analyze results to be reported to patients, physicians, or registered nurses.
- Conduct Quality Assurance work to ensure equipment accuracy.
- Demonstrate core competencies annually or as requested.
- Perform and verify the accuracy of technical lab procedures.
- Maintain records of procedures performed, patient results, and required quality control.
- Document remedial actions for out‑of‑control procedures.
- Perform preventive maintenance of laboratory instrumentation as assigned.
- Read and understand all procedure manuals on an annual basis.
- Collect biological specimens and forward them to appropriate reference laboratories.
- Provide instruction to students and new employees regarding procedures and departmental policies.
Requirements
- Current ASCP certification.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
