About the role
The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) 1 is responsible for the pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens, including sorting, verification of specimen labeling, order entry, distribution, and specimen retrieval.
The CLA 1 procures and prepares blood specimens through venipuncture and arterial puncture, adhering to departmental standards such as proper tube selection, patient preparation, puncture site care, and accurate patient and specimen identification.
The role also involves collecting electrocardiograms in inpatient and outpatient settings, prioritizing workload based on laboratory procedures, and handling challenging situations such as combative patients or those difficult to draw for medical reasons.
The CLA 1 performs proper collection of throat and nasopharyngeal swabs and provides instruction on collecting urine, stool, and sputum cultures.
Responsibilities
- Pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens (sorting, labeling verification, order entry, distribution, and retrieval).
- Procurement and preparation of blood specimens via venipuncture and arterial puncture, following departmental standards.
- Collection of electrocardiograms in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Prioritization of workload based on laboratory procedures and patient needs.
- Handling challenging patient situations, including combative patients or those difficult to draw for medical reasons.
- Collection of throat and nasopharyngeal swabs.
- Instruction of patients on proper collection of urine, stool, and sputum cultures.
Requirements
- Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency as required for the job title and assigned unit/area(s).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer skills for accurate specimen entry into the laboratory information system.
- Ability to address patients’ growth and development needs, particularly related to age-specific care.
