NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The facility includes the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services such as women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It operates a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, and multiple outpatient sites including a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

About the role

The Clinical Instructor will play a major role in the orientation of new nursing personnel, guiding the process from the classroom to the clinical area by working with orientees and preceptors. This role encompasses functions as an educator, facilitator, change agent, consultant, researcher, and leader, aligned with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment of Educational Needs
    • Collects pertinent information related to potential educational needs using techniques such as focus groups, questionnaires, evaluations of past programs, and trend analysis.
    • Gathers data from nurses, professional organizations, consumers, nursing experts, healthcare system trends, and advances in treatment and technology.
    • Derives target audience and learner needs from assessment data.
  • Identification of Educational Outcomes
    • Identifies the general purpose and educational objectives for each learning activity based on learner needs.
    • Ensures educational objectives are attainable with available resources and incorporate adult learning principles.
  • Planning
    • Partners with content experts to develop activities facilitating achievement of educational objectives.
    • Documents content outlines and ensures planning reflects adult learning principles.
  • Implementation
    • Ensures planned educational activities are implemented in a timely and appropriate manner.
    • Verifies consistency with the planned general purpose, educational objectives, and content outline.
  • Evaluation
    • Conducts comprehensive, systematic, ongoing, and criterion-based evaluations of educational activities.
    • Evaluates effectiveness in relation to learners' achievement of educational objectives.
    • Incorporates evaluation data into future planning.
  • Quality of Nursing Development Practice
    • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of Nursing Professional Development practice.
    • Identifies aspects of practice important for quality monitoring and relevant indicators.
    • Collects and analyzes data to identify improvement opportunities.
    • Formulates recommendations to enhance professional practice.
    • Participates in interdisciplinary teams evaluating professional development.

Requirements

  • Current license to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible acute care nursing experience.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational content, teaching and learning theories, adult education principles, and evaluation methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • High-level computer skills.

Pay

The salary range for this per diem role is $73.78 - $1.42 hourly. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
