Clinical Imaging Scientist, Translational Radiology

About the role

AstraZeneca is seeking a Clinical Imaging Scientist (CIS) to provide strategic and technical expertise in the conception and implementation of imaging strategies for all phases of clinical development (Phase I-III) within the Oncology portfolio. The role focuses on implementing standard methodology imaging and tumor assessment for key primary, secondary, and exploratory efficacy endpoints.

The CIS will support sophisticated clinical targeted drug development programs by improving imaging and tumor assessment processes or developing new technologies and approaches at national, regional, or global levels, consistent with AstraZeneca and regulatory standards. This role interfaces strategically and operationally with functional areas including medical development, clinical operations, data management, statistics, and regulatory affairs, as well as external CROs.

Responsibilities

• Provide expertise in common tumor response assessment algorithms (e.g., RECIST 1.1, immune-related RECIST, RANO) and their deployment in clinical trials.
• Support clinical development teams by defining efficient tumor assessment data collection methods for new imaging requirements.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external CROs to ensure consistent implementation of imaging standards for independent central review.
• Train, teach, and troubleshoot for clinical development teams.
• Liaise with internal clinical teams and external partners, including CROs, to ensure timely delivery of high-quality imaging results.
• Understand and support the Blinded Independent Centralized Review process, including review paradigms, radiologist analysis applications, eCRFs, and operational/regulatory documents.
• Provide advice on quality assurance, data integrity, and regulatory compliance (GCP) at investigative sites and external vendors.
• Serve as the Imaging subject matter expert for cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and communication.
• Work with PACS systems, image analysis software, and emerging AI/machine learning integrations in imaging.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree.
• Imaging-related degree and/or professional training, preferably with practical clinical experience in immuno-oncology/oncology imaging (radiographic, medical, or physical science-based).
• 5+ years of experience supporting Oncology clinical trials (Phase I-III) with imaging components (may substitute for formal qualifications).
• Strong communication, negotiation, and influencing skills for multidisciplinary team collaboration.
• Proactive, flexible approach with a focus on timely delivery of high-quality imaging results.

Qualifications (Desirable)

• Experience using medical imaging in immuno-oncology/oncology research, particularly in clinical trials.
• Understanding of the end-to-end drug development process.
• Sufficient immunology and oncology disease area knowledge to engage confidently with internal and external partners.
• Technical experience with clinical imaging modalities (e.g., CT, MRI, PET/CT, bone scans).
• Leadership experience interfacing with external communities (e.g., CROs, third-party providers, site monitors).
• Experience troubleshooting imaging-related issues and ensuring GCP/regulatory compliance.
• Familiarity with PACS systems, image analysis software, and AI/machine learning applications in imaging.

Pay

Annual base pay ranges from $203,709.60 to $305,564.40.
