Clinical Ethics Fellow

About the role

This position is a two-year fellowship designed to prepare individuals for the complex and challenging work of a Clinical Ethicist. The fellowship focuses on mastering advanced aspects of applied ethical theory, law, clinical practice, ethics consultation, conflict management and resolution, effective communication, and interprofessional collaboration. Fellows will build upon their graduate work in ethics, coupling theoretical frameworks with practical, action/reflection-based experiences.

Fellows will actively participate in educational work, clinical ethics consultation, organizational ethics support, and the provision of clinical ethics education to disciplines such as chaplains, nurses, social workers, and physician trainees. The goal is to graduate fellows who are prepared to sit for professional exams and compete for clinical ethics roles nationwide.

Responsibilities

• Work under the direction of the System Director of Clinical Ethics and staff Clinical Ethicists, who provide educational foundations and oversight of clinical work.
• Begin with a strong emphasis on theoretical frameworks, transitioning to increased direct involvement in clinical ethics consultations as skills develop.
• Provide basic clinical ethics education to other disciplines and independently cover ethics consultations across the system as experience grows.
• Engage in the following key areas:
  • Education (25%): Receive training in ethics theory, legal/regulatory frameworks, and clinical practice through lectures, assigned readings, interdisciplinary rotations, case studies, and mentoring.
  • Consultation (60%): Provide consultative services to clinical providers, with oversight decreasing as fellows demonstrate mastery of skills and knowledge.
  • Research and Publication (15%): Research various issues and produce at least one article for journal submission on a topic of choice.
• Perform additional duties as requested by supervisors, with a focus on safety, quality, and efficiency as part of a High Reliability Organization (HRO).

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Bioethics (required) or an equivalent field directly related to clinical ethics.
• Knowledge of ethical theory, legal foundations, and the regulatory environment related to clinical ethics in a medical setting.
• Ability to form and maintain positive interdisciplinary relationships.

Schedule

Day shift; scheduled weekly hours as needed.
