Clinical Ethicist - 140801

UC San Diego Health is seeking a Clinical Ethicist to join its established Clinical Ethics Program. This role supports a fully integrated, collaborative approach to addressing ethical issues across a leading academic medical center.

About the role

The Clinical Ethicist will report to the Ethics Program Manager and participate in a rotation of on-call ethicists conducting consultations across UC San Diego Health. The position offers opportunities to facilitate and expand clinical ethics rounds, deliver ethics education, steer policy development, advise the ethics committee, and pursue ethics quality improvement, research, and scholarship.

Responsibilities

• Rotate on- and off-call for the Ethics Consult Service, providing 24/7 clinical ethics consultation for patients, families, and clinical staff.
• Plan, deliver, and evaluate ethics education for healthcare providers, residents, students, and the community.
• Develop, implement, and participate in ethics rounds for key clinical services.
• Analyze and improve ethics consultation methods as needed.
• Coordinate and lead ethics-relevant quality improvement initiatives and research projects.
• Serve as a member and expert advisor to the UC San Diego Health Medical Ethics Committee.
• Develop, review, and revise system policies and guidelines requiring ethical guidance or oversight.
• Act as a liaison and provide ethical guidance to relevant committees and high-priority initiatives.
• Conduct collaborative and independent ethics scholarship, disseminating work through publications and presentations.

Requirements

• Eleven (11) years of related clinical ethics and clinical ethics consultation experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus seven (7) years of related experience/training.
• Ability to apply sound principles and standards in completing highly complex and technical assignments.
• Strong skills in gathering, organizing, analyzing, and reporting on complex issues and recommendations.
• Ability to apply policy and legal concepts to ethical issues.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to work independently with all levels of University personnel, including management and faculty, and to facilitate agreement on issues and corrective actions.
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely, both written and verbally, to all levels of management and administrators.
• Strong decision-making skills for critical issues.
• Ability to present information thoroughly and completely.

Preferred Qualifications

• Terminal degree (e.g., PhD, JD, MD) in a field related to bioethics highly preferred.
• Successful completion of a fellowship in clinical ethics highly preferred.

Pay

Hiring Pay Scale: $151,700 - $180,400 per year. Annual Full Pay Range: $123,000 - $237,800 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%). Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and business/organizational needs.

Schedule

Variable, 8 hours/day, Monday through Friday. Full-time (100%) career appointment.
