About the role
The role involves performing direct and indirect patient care activities under the supervision of a registered professional nurse. Duties include assisting in providing high quality, cost-effective care, interacting with patients and their families, and transporting patients.
Responsibilities
- Provides basic physical care to promote patient comfort as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Affords assistance with activities of daily living, making all assigned beds, and safely transporting patients according to WVUH's Safe Patient Handling Policy.
- Performs routine phlebotomy services, excluding line draws, in departments determined by management.
- Monitors vital signs such as temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, intake and output, weight, and abdominal girth according to departmental policy.
- Supports respiratory care by setting up equipment for oxygen administration and encouraging the usage of Incentive Spirometers.
- Reports patient concerns and changes in condition to a registered nurse immediately.
- Assists in examinations and diagnostic procedures, and assists with basic rehab/Physical Therapy activities.
- Communicates with RN regarding nutrition issues and provides total care within scope of practice.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment to prevent infections and ensure patient, visitor, and employee safety.
- Maintains clean assigned unit equipment and reports necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel.
- Assists in routine unit operations as directed/needed to maintain smooth communication and functioning of the unit.
- Answers telephone and patient call bells, relaying messages accurately and promptly.
- Completes errands as requested.
- Removes out-of-date items.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support or HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire date.
- Prior patient care experience preferred.

Skills
- Demonstrated competency in the use of Safe Patient Handling equipment.
- Excellent communication skills and strong customer service orientation.
