About the role

The Clinical Assistant Professor or Instructor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences (Practitioner) position at USC Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences is a full-time faculty position with an academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and clinical service assignment in the PBHS UPC clinic.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Clinical Director of PBHS at UPC clinic and Coordinator of Case Management Services for PBHS at UPC
  • Assist in the design and implementation of case management services and assessment for the PBHS at UPC clinic
  • Work with patients and others to obtain information to assess patient needs, recommend treatment, and assess treatment progress
  • Care for patients by coordinating referrals to on-and-off campus services, including higher level of care programs; providing regular follow up and assessment to ensure linkage and usage of referred services
  • Assist students taking a Health Leave of Absence by coordinating with campus partners and connecting students to community resources and out of state referrals
  • Provide regular check-ins with patients who require additional support outside of psychiatry and/or weekly psychotherapy and to promote continuity of care when the primary provider is unavailable
  • Coordinate patient’s discharge by reviewing and preparing discharge plans and post-discharge recommendations, including referrals to community providers
  • Maintain confidential client records by reviewing case notes and client progress, and logging events
  • Consult with service providers and community agencies on case management issues and needs
  • Meet with patients requesting a change in provider to explore patient concerns and facilitate transfer when indicated
  • Carry a caseload of patients (clinical case management and psychotherapy) totaling approximately 15 billable hours per week
  • Serve as back-up on-call clinician in 2 week intervals approximately 1-2 times per semester
  • Coordinate with USC Student Health Care Coordinators, to ensure that patients are connected with services
  • Communicate patients’ progress by participating in weekly interdisciplinary meetings and evaluations; disseminate results and obstacles to therapeutic team
  • Complete timely billing and documentation of services provided
  • Improve faculty and staff competence by providing educational resources
  • Perform case management duties for assigned patients
  • Monitor cases identified as having elevated risk factors and participate as a member of the PBHS high risk team (RWell) to support and provide specialized treatment to patients who have recently experienced a suicidal crisis

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Licensed in the state of California
  • Expertise in and prior experience providing clinical case management and short-term treatment, including brief psychotherapy, motivational interviewing, stabilization and referral of serious mental illness, and crisis intervention
  • Resilient, self-aware, and can thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment
  • Multicultural competency in working with students and adults of color, from all economic classes, first generation students, LGBTQ identified individuals, and international students
