Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Large Animal Surgery

About the Role

The Department of Large Animal Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, is seeking candidates for a clinical-track faculty position in large animal surgery at the rank of Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor. The successful candidate will join three other large animal surgeons on the daytime elective large animal surgery service. The caseload is approximately 85% equine, with the remainder primarily small ruminants, companion pigs, new world camelids, and cattle. The surgery service is supported by three to four surgery residents and four rotating interns shared with other hospital services.

Faculty assignment will be based on the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the unit. As a clinical-track faculty position, the candidate will be expected to be on the large animal surgery service providing clinical instruction and service approximately 65-70% of the year. The majority of this service is daytime elective service with occasional emergency duty afterhours.

Responsibilities

• Supervise house officers and students receiving cases through the Hospital.
• Participate in the department’s relevant clinical rotations, as well as didactic and laboratory courses. Instructional responsibilities in the discipline are shared with the other six board-certified large animal surgeons.
• Provide service to clients and referring veterinarians as an integral part of hospital duties. Promote caseload and innovative services to serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Development of continuing education programs for veterinarians and the public is encouraged.
• Participate in scholarly activities related to the clinical service and teaching missions of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Collaboration with colleagues within the department and across other departments and colleges is encouraged.

Requirements

• DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine.
• Board certification or eligibility for board certification in large animal surgery.
• Valid Georgia veterinary license (regular or faculty).
• For Clinical Assistant Professor: Completion of residency training in Large Animal Surgery (minimum of 4 years post-DVM experience).
• For Clinical Associate Professor: Board certification in large animal surgery and a minimum of 9 years post-DVM experience (at least 5 years at the rank of clinical assistant professor or comparable training).
• For Clinical Professor: Board certification in large animal surgery and a minimum of 14 years post-DVM experience (at least 5 years at the rank of clinical associate professor or comparable training).

Skills

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Organized, team-oriented, and adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances.
• Evidence of clinical, laboratory, and/or didactic teaching experience is advantageous.
• Able to stand, sit, walk, or crouch for long periods of time and work around/with large animals.
