Responsibilities

  • Process all incoming and outgoing inmate correspondence, prepare forms, and maintain records and files related to inmate correspondence.
  • Perform administrative duties necessary to ensure the processing of all offender correspondence in compliance with correspondence rules under Florida administrative codes pertaining to mail procedures.
  • Review incoming books intended for offender receipt; inspect general offender correspondence, publications, and packages; and maintain all records and files pertinent to processing offender correspondence and mailroom activities.
  • Sort, open, inspect, and scan inmate correspondence. Maintain related records. Deliver inmate mail.
  • Push and pull mail carts, carry mail bins, and lift and move packages. Requires climbing stairs and long periods of walking or standing.
  • Act as authorized courier for receipt of registered, special delivery, or other mails received for employees and/or inmates.
  • Sort departmental mail.
  • Provide information and responses to inquiries regarding routine mailroom procedures.
  • Maintain contact with US Postal Service personnel and private mail carriers (e.g., UPS, Federal Express).
  • Operate postal equipment and ascertain postage needed.
  • Prepare various forms related to the processing of inmate correspondence and mailroom functions.
  • Deliver outgoing mail each afternoon to the post office.
  • Ensure offenders do not handle other offender’s correspondence.
  • Respond to offender questions, complaints, and/or requests pertaining to their correspondence.
  • Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
  • Maintain accountability of inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within capabilities as determined by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior experience in a correctional setting preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of Florida with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
  • Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements.
