About the role

We are seeking a motivated and experienced R&D Systems Engineer. The Field Engineer serves as the operational and technical interface between the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), NNSA laboratories, NNSA production agencies and the Department of War (DoW) for sustainment or modernization of nuclear weapons in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Research, plan, develop and execute activities associated with delivering and fielding nuclear weapons related equipment and hands-on operations while in DoW custody.
  • Elicit information from personnel with very different perspectives (weapon system project leads, NNSA program leads, DoW logistics leads, DoW personnel performing hands on nuclear weapons work) to develop solutions that can be successfully implemented in the field.
  • Work closely with the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) systems organizations, NNSA, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Air Force and Navy to coordinate resolution of Unsatisfactory Reports, enable stockpile and test and handling equipment improvements, and manage nuclear weapon material spares.
  • Develop and execute nuclear weapons training for diverse audiences within the NNSA complex and the DoW.
  • Develop and publish joint Department of Energy (DOE)/DoW procedures for maintaining nuclear weapons and associated hardware.
  • Evaluate and coordinate appropriate disposition of non-conforming nuclear weapons parts.
  • Collaborate with Accident Response Group to develop technical basis for national level exercises and technical training activities.
  • Travel is required to support both engineering and training activities.
  • Sigma 15 access is also required and therefore, the field engineer may be subject to possible random polygraphs.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • A current and active DOE Q-level security or equivalent DoW Top Secret security clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain additional clearances, which may require a polygraph test.

Qualifications We Desire

  • A graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
