Home every night with occasional weekend work. Position involves handling, segregating, packing, and inspecting chemical waste in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulations. This is a customer-facing role working at customer sites daily, including plants, labs, and household hazardous waste collections.
About the Role
Clean Harbors in Riverside, CA is seeking an Environmental Field Chemist (CleanPack Chemist) to support environmental services, including lab packs, household hazardous waste (HHW) collections, and lab moves. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for growth into management roles.
This role is not laboratory-based. Clean Harbors is the leading provider of environmental, energy, and industrial services across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
Responsibilities
- Ensure Health and Safety is the number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and processes.
- Prepare computer-generated packing lists, labels, manifests, and land disposal restriction notifications.
- Perform inspections of staging, accumulating, and storage areas to ensure proper housekeeping and compliance.
- Inspect storage areas and drums for leaks, spills, and compliance with labeling regulations.
- Collect, segregate, and properly package waste chemicals for disposal to maximize efficiency and maintain compliance.
- Execute jobs at customer locations, including Fortune 500 companies.
- Responsible for final preparation and approval of all projects before shipment in accordance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company policies.
- Conduct projects/jobs according to site-specific Federal, State, and local regulations and health and safety plans.
- Understand customer-specific disposal restrictions and special packaging requirements.
- Sample and profile new waste streams or any waste needing analytical testing.
- Ensure drum count is correct and drum conditions are shippable per company policies.
- Follow all local, state, and federal compliance regulations and rules.
- Safely operate vehicles in accordance with U.S. DOT, local, state, and federal requirements.
- Observe all corporate operating guidelines and environmental health and safety procedures.
Requirements
- Valid Driver’s license.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Obtain a CDL Class B with Hazmat and Tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment (Tanker endorsement can be obtained upon hire).
- Perform physical functions as required by the job.
- Successfully complete a background check, drug test, and physical.
- Per OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard, employees in positions requiring respirators must meet facial hair standards.
Qualifications
- Preferred: College degree in Chemistry or Natural Science.
- Preferred: Previous experience in Environmental Services (e.g., remediation, abatement, emergency spill response).

Pay
Recruiting pay range: $25–$27 per hour.
Schedule
- 5:00 AM start time.
- 10–12 hour days with a lot of overtime.
Career Growth
This is an entry-level management position with pathways to approximately 15 other roles within Clean Harbors. Many middle and senior management staff began in this role. After 18–36 months, you may transition into a salaried management position. Internal transfers to over 200 branch locations are available.
