CleanPack Chemist

Clean Harbors in Groveport, OH is seeking an Environmental Field Chemist (CleanPack Chemist) to handle chemical waste in compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations. This customer-facing role involves working at customer sites daily, including plants, labs, and household hazardous waste collections.

About the Role

This is an entry-level position offering opportunities for growth and development within Clean Harbors. Many middle and senior management staff began their careers in this role. Transitioning military personnel are encouraged to apply, as this position leverages skills applicable to civilian life. After 18–36 months, employees may transition into salaried management roles or other positions within the company’s 200+ branch locations.

Responsibilities

• Ensure Health and Safety is the top priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and processes.
• Prepare computer-generated packing lists, labels, manifests, and land disposal restriction notifications.
• Perform inspections of staging, accumulating, and storage areas to ensure proper housekeeping and compliance.
• Inspect storage areas and drums for leaks, spills, and compliance with labeling regulations.
• Collect, segregate, and properly package waste chemicals for disposal to maximize efficiency and maintain compliance.
• Execute jobs at customer locations, including Fortune 500 companies, in accordance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company policies.
• Conduct projects/jobs per site-specific Federal, State, and local regulations and health and safety plans.
• Understand customer-specific disposal restrictions and special packaging requirements.
• Sample and profile new waste streams or any waste needing analytical testing.
• Ensure drum count is accurate and drum conditions meet company policies for shipment.
• Follow all local, state, and federal compliance regulations and rules.
• Safely operate vehicles in accordance with U.S. DOT and other regulatory requirements.
• Observe all corporate operating guidelines and environmental health and safety procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Valid Driver’s license.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Obtain a CDL Class B with hazmat and tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment (by position).
• Perform physical functions as required by the job.
• Successfully complete a background check, drug test, and physical (by position).
• Per OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard, employees in positions requiring respirators must meet facial hair standards.

Preferred Qualifications

• College degree in Chemistry or Natural Science.
• Previous experience in Environmental Services (e.g., remediation, abatement, emergency spill response).
