Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• “ESEA Highly Qualified” by meeting one of the following:
  • Completed at least two years of study (48 semester or 72 quarter hours) verified by a college transcript from an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • Obtained an associate (or higher) degree from an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • Passed the Praxis exam for Paraprofessionals as approved by the Ohio Department of Education.
• Capable of physically assisting students with special needs (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others.
• Willingness to assume responsibilities appropriate for the position.
• Support the Mission Statement of the district.
• Behave and speak in a professional manner.
• Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance.
• Attend required staff and team meetings and training.
• Capable of lifting 50 lbs.

About the Role

Special education attendants work under the overall supervision of the building principal with direct supervision provided by the intervention specialists. They are employed to implement special education or related services for a student and/or to provide direct assistance to a student. Duties vary depending upon the age of students served as well as the nature and severity of the student's disabilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the classroom teachers.
• Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress.
• Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
• Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists, counselors, occupational and physical therapists.
• Assist classroom teachers with maintaining student records.
• Support students with emotional or behavioral concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
• Help assist with toileting and hygiene needs of students.
• Provide general duties when the student is absent.
• Conduct other duties as assigned.
